  1. Chapter 9, Section 1 Notes • Title: Revolution Begins • Main Idea: The first shots of the Texas Revolution were fired, and Texans took steps to govern themselves. • Key Terms: committees of correspondence, siege, provisional government, municipality, regular army

  2. I. A Mexican Army Arrives in Texas • Tension continued to build in Texas as the actions of Travis and other radicals caused concern for the Mexican authorities. • GeneralCosarrived in SanAntoniowith 650 troops to bring order.

  3. I. A Mexican Army Arrives in Texas • Result? Texans felt threatened by this action; so committees of correspondence (local groups sharing political and military information) much like those formed during the AmericanRevolution—sprang up to keep the colonists informed.

  4. II.Battle of Gonzales—Lexington of Texas • It happened on October2, 1835. • It is called the Lexington of Texas because it was the first official battle of the TexasRevolution. Why Lexington? • It is very similar to the first battle of the AmericanRevolution—when the British attempted to take arms from American colonists in Lexington, Massachusetts.

  5. II.Battle of Gonzales—Lexington of Texas C. The Mexican commander Colonel Ugartechea demanded the return of a 20 inch brasscannon from the people at Gonzales. D. The people refused, buried the cannon to hide it, dug it up, and mounted it on a wagon. Then, they made a white flag out of a weddingdress with a taunting motto,or slogan, “Come and TakeIt”!

  6. II.Battle of Gonzales—Lexington of Texas • The Texan commander Colonel John H. Moore led 160 Texan soldiers against 100 Mexican soldiers in a 15 minute early morning battle. • Only 1 Mexican soldier is killed. • The Texans win the battle!

  7. III. On To San Antonio A. A week after Gonzales, 120 Texans took Goliad by surprise! These 2 victories convinced many Texans that the Mexican army could be defeated. • SFA was appointed command of the “Army of the People” of about 300 Texans as they set out to defeat Cos’s army at SanAntonio. • There, SFA decided to lay siege (military blockade) around the city because they didn’t have any heavyartillery to attack Cos’s army.

  8. IV. Peace Party Prevails at the Consultation A. Meanwhile, 58 delegates met in SanFelipe at a Consultation on November 3, 1835. • Here, the delegates officially split into 2parties: • War Party—favored immediate declaration of independence from Mexico. • Peace Party—also against Santa Anna, but wanted to support the Mexican Constitution of 1824.

  9. IV. Peace Party Prevails At the Consultation • Result? A document is written, “The Declaration of the People of Texas in General Convention Assembled”; Peace Party prevails by a vote 33-14; Texas now declares itself a free, Mexican state.

Peace Party Prevails At the Consultation • Texans declare they are loyal citizens of Mexico. • Texans pledge to support the MexicanConstitution of 1824. • Texans declare they have taken up arms to defend themselves and oppose the rule of SantaAnna. • Texans urged all Mexican citizens to join their struggle for a democratic government.
