BELLWORK Have you kept up on current events over break? What current events have intrigued you the most?
PLANNER: Homework • Please review the handout I give you with your parents or guardian and determine how you would like to retrieve your source for the Quarter 2 project • Do some research to figure out which leader you would like to do your project on-- not every option I have given will have a resource on your leader!
This Quarter’s Project • This quarter, you will be picking a leader to read a nonfiction novel about • It can be any world leader, just make sure that you are really interested in them! • This will be a quarter-long project • You will be independently reading this novel and writing a report about the leader • Along with a report, you will do a short presentation on the leader
Which Leader? • This week, we will go over a few different types of leaders to give you ideas of what type of leader you might want to read about • I will not be allowing e-books or Kindle versions, so you must be able to find a book about your leader in print • There will be other small assignments related to your leader throughout the quarter, so it is important that you bring your book to every class
Length of Book • Please pick something reasonable-- this should not be a picture book, but it should also not be a 1000 page book that you could not finish in one quarter • Aim for about 250-300 pages, if you feel that is manageable • You will both be reading this book in class and outside of class, so again, make sure it is interesting!
So… What is A “Leader?” • A leader can be anyone that has held an official position in some sort of Government • They cannot be just someone that has influential power, like a celebrity-- they have to be someone that has actually held office • This book should have its roots in the political-- of course, it can be a biography that gives background, but that background must matter to the leader’s political history
Ideas • It may be tough to pick someone to research, but here are some questions to get you started: • Who might inspire you to be a better leader in your own life? • Who in politics have you always been curious about? • Is there a political scandal that you have always wanted to know more about? • What is your favorite era? What was the political climate like during that time? • Are you interested in American politics or would you like to go international?
Ideas • Does anyone have any ideas of who they would like to research?
Leaders • We will start easy, with American leaders • There are some leaders that have a lot of books written about them • A few examples: • Abraham Lincoln • John F. Kennedy • Teddy Roosevelt • Alexander Hamilton • Benjamin Franklin • ...the list goes on!
Leaders • It will be the easiest to find books on American politicians, but not necessarily the most rewarding • If you are interested in international leaders, you might look into rulers of a monarchy or Prime Ministers • A couple examples: • Henry VIII • Queen Elizabeth • Winston Churchill • As mentioned before, your leader does not have to be recent-- they just have to be interesting to you!
Leaders • If you are having trouble or are feeling stuck, please come talk to me • We will find the perfect leader for you! • At the end of the quarter, you will be giving the class the lowdown on your leader, so make sure that you have a good one picked out!
