  7. AUSTRALIA: Waste/Recycling • Getting better but legislation is weak (or non-existent) • Regulations for hazardous chemicals and industrial waste • Massive land for “land fill”

  8. AUSTRALIA: Climate Change • Australians per capita bad greenhouse polluters • Australia’s pollution as high as UK but a third of the population

  9. AUSTRALIA: Greenhouse Issues • Kyoto Protocol (signed late 2007) • Introduce National Emissions Trading Scheme • Mandatory renewable energy target (20% by 2020) • Energy Efficiency Act 2006 and policies • New Government buildings to be 4.5 stars Government approaches:

  10. AUSTRALIA: Greenhouse Issues • Environmental education • Sustainability • National Environmental Education Council • Big push to revise National Action Plan for Education for Sustainability (late stage then change of Government) Government approaches continued:

  14. AUSTRALIA: Greenhouse Issues • Commenced environmental management 2005 • Energy: motion sensors; dimmers; low energy globes • Water (plant native, not UK plants!) • Recycling (paper 75% less to land fill) • Green Office • Recycled paper whole University • All computers hibernate over night • Waterless urinals • Car fleet: carbon emissions offset through tree planting • Flora and fauna plan for rural campus • Developing ISO 14001 environmental management plan Edith Cowan University

  15. “Sustainability” is on the agenda in Australia. • Movement has been at the speed of a run-away glacier. • However, things are about to “hot up”! Conclusions
