  1. Unit 33 Task 3 and Task 5 Presentation15th December 2015 Neave Gilpin

  2. 15th September 2015 Session 1- Wansfell AmblesideWalking Weather Forecast Forecast: Cloudy Actual weather: Cloudy with sunny spells

  3. Session 1- Wansfell Ambleside Skills and techniques used and learnt:“ Today I learnt how to understand contour lines and I learnt the four D’s. I also learnt how to estimate height. “ – What I learnt“ I improved my map reading skills. I could only do this to a basic level previously. “ – What I improved on“ We used six figure grid references which were useful to find certain points on the map throughout the day” - What I already knew

  4. Session 1- Wansfell Ambleside Personal technical abilities and personal fitness.- my personal fitness and strength was suitable for the walk, and I was able to do the activity efficiently.Technical skills particular to activity - The skills I used for the activity were being able to understand six figure grid references, knowing map symbols and being able to read a map to a basic level. Generic skills and knowledge- I was able to have a reliable weather forecast before we set off- I was able to communicate with the group to make sure the navigation was correct. - I provided myself with food and water so I was able to conserve energy throughout the day. - Emergency procedures were discussed as a group before the activity began to help prevent any accidents or possible incidents.

  5. Session 1- Wansfell Ambleside What went well?I was able to put the skills I previously knew such as understanding a map and understanding the features on a map into practise which helped me understand them into further depth. What I needed to improve on…I needed to improve my understanding of contour lines and I needed to improve on calculating the height of areas on a map and calculating distance on the map.

  6. 22nd September 2015 Session 2- Brown Howe QuarryClimbing Weather Forecast Forecast: Sunny and cloudy Actual weather: Sunny and cloudy

  7. Session 2- Brown Howe Quarry Skills and techniques used and learnt“ I learnt how to do an Italian hitch and how to set up an abseil , how to use the correct knots appropriately and how to fit a helmet and a harness to a high standard “ – what I learnt “ I used my skills of knowing how to belay and tie in correctly “ – Skills I used

  8. Personal and technical abilitiesI used my flexibility and strength to be able to complete the climb. Technical skills particular to activityI was able to belay correctly and use knots and ropes appropriately .Personal FitnessMy fitness suited the climbing activity, my level of stamina allowed me to get to the top without being overly tired and exhausted.Generic skills and knowledge I made note of the weather forecast to be able to estimate the risks of climbing in the weather that was forecast. I communicated with my climber when I was the belayer to make sure they were safe and understood the risks of the activity which reduced the overall risk.

  9. What went well? The belaying strategy that I already knew went well and I learnt a few new knots when doing the abseil which were useful further on in the climbing practical days. What I needed to improve on…I needed to improve on knowing the knots in full confidence without assistance to be able to get a distinction in the assessment.

  10. 29th September 2015 Session 3 – Haweswater Weather Forecast Forecast: cloudy and windy Actual weather: Sunny and cloudy

  11. Session 3- Haweswater Skills and techniques learnt and used: I learnt how to use a map into further depth ( finding cairns, contour lines ) and I learnt how to judge distance on a map by understanding pacing and putting it into practise, which helped me on my walking assessment when showing my skills. – what I learnt

  12. Session 3- Haweswater Personal technical abilitiesMy level of stamina allowed me to finish the walking practical without a struggle.Technical skills particular to activity Due to practise, I was able to use a compass to get me to a specific mound, given information on the distance to walk and the bearing to take. Generic skills and knowledgeBy understanding the possible risks, I was aware of who had the first aid kids and shelters and I was also aware of possible weather changes from my forecast.

  13. Session 3- Haweswater What went well?I began to fully understand pacing and judging distance which helped me show this skill off in the walking assessment. What I needed to improve on…I needed to improve on staying on track with the map, I often found myself getting distracted then losing my location on the map which could have become a risk if the conditions were bad.

  14. 13th October 2015 Session 4- Hudson Roof Weather forecast Forecast- sunny spells, cloudy, 13⁰C Actual Weather- cloudy with sunny spells

  15. Skills and techniques used and learnt“ I used the knots I learnt on the last climbing practical ( double figure of eight, clove hitch, Italian hitch) and put used them to practise setting up a top rope climb. I also learnt how to attach myself to a belay device correctly “ – The skills I knewAt Hutton Roof I learnt how to set up a climb so that I knew what to do in the climbing assessment.

  16. What went well?I had clearly remembered how to wear the equipment correctly and I had remembered how to use knots correctly which meant that things went faster because I knew them and didn’t need to practise and I didn’t need assistance. What I needed to improve on…“ I need to practise setting up the climb so that on my final assessment I can do it confidently without faults so that I could achieve a distinction “

  17. 3rd November 2015 Session 5- Church Crag Weather Forecast Forecast- sunny and cold Actually weather- Very Foggy and cold

  18. Skills and techniques learnt and used“ I used all the skills that I have been learning on practical days and I was confident in setting up a top rope climb. I put my skills into further practise which meant I feel more confident for the climbing assessment. I also managed to perfect my stopper knot which I had previously been struggling with. “ – The skills I used “I learnt why an Italian hitch is different to a clove hitch” – What I learnt

  19. What went well?Setting up the rope set up went well along with everything else. What I need to improve on;Remembering to put my helmet on...

  20. Session 6 – Brunt fell (staveley) Weather Forecast Forecast- cloudy with sunny spellsActual weather- Cloudy

  21. Skills and techniques learnt and usedI was able to use a compass because I had learnt how to in previous walking practical which meant I was able to take 2 bearings throughout the day. I also worked out the grid reference of the next location we were going to. All of the skills that Id learnt throughout previous weeks were able to be done confidently ready for the walking assessment.

  22. Walking and climbing I found that I learnt new skills faster in climbing than walking and I found the climbing skills easier to remember and put into practise confidently. There was a few skills that took me a while to fully understand such as using a compass and picking up on land features. However, I learnt more on the walking practical's because I previously knew many of the climbing skills.

  23. Different skills I learnt • The difference between a clove hitch and a Italian hitch and why the clove hitch is the safest for a top rope climb • The difference methods of tying a figure of eight knot • I learnt the difference in accuracy between north south east and west and telling an accurate bearing
