  2. EEA Mission Statement “To be an excellent Association of Business Leaders dedicated to the intellectual and economic growth of our membership” 119 Primary member firms, 65 Associates & 3 Honorary 13,000+ Staff & over $3B annual revenue

EEA Goals and Objectives • Goals • To be the best business to business Networking organization in the City of Edmonton, Nationally, and Internationally • Objectives • To institute and maintain a method of exchanging and interchanging business information amongst its members. • To create an agency to bring its members in touch with business opportunities. • To create and encourage cooperation, business efficiency and service of its members. • To encourage local, national and foreign trade expansion of its members. • To promote a better acquaintance and closer association among its members.

Membership Committee Responsibilities • Identify Open Classifications • Encourage Guests • Recruit More Quality Members • Investigate Potentials • Maintain continued growth with “quality” members • Changes in Membership • Orientation of new members and representatives • Manage Membership conflicts and classification overlaps

  5. Roster • Directors information on front • Alphabetical with detail, Numerical on back • Only printed 1 or 2 times a year • Up to date info is always on line.

Membership EligibilityNew Qualifications being approved by Board • Company must have been in business for 5 years, Annual Revenue in excess of $1,000,000, have at least 5 employees, • Classification must be 75% of revenue, • Member must be Owner or Senior Executive of Company, If an Employee, the ability to do TWO or more: • sign or authorize contracts binding the company. • sign or authorize the issuance of checks • authorize the purchase of goods or services from other members on behalf of the company. • Classification must be Open: i.e. Medical Office, Residential Furniture, Golf Course, • many others

Pre Guest Meeting Day Sponsor identifies/Advises ED ED advises Membership committee who make decision on invitation of potential member Guest Day Meeting Attend Breakfast Meeting Sponsor introduces member Post Guest Attendance ED sends information package and application form – Applicant & Sponsor forms Application Process Sponsor & Applicant & accountant submit App. Forms & letters Membership Committee investigates application & interviews sponsor, does site visit, Notice of application posted in Newsletter twice Written objections received Board votes on member appl. Following Board Vote ED advises Candidate, Sponsor and Mentor of Approval New Member Orientation Site Visit by ED New Member Refresher (semi-annual) Procedures for Potential New Member

Membership Types • Holder of Classification (Company) • Classification 75% of firm’s revenue • Only one classification in EEA • Changes can be made only by re-application • Primary Member (Individual) • Has vote at meetings & Eligible to be a Director • Must attend 50% of meetings • Associate Membership • Apply for associate after one year • Must be appropriate Executive level • No voting rights, except by Proxy for Primary member • Not eligible to be Director • Honorary Membership – annual review • Member for at least 10 years, normally ex President ; Retired from all ‘active’ business, no voting rights; reviewed annually

Mentor Role • Visit New Member Site • Review and explain all pertinent information about EEA. • Explain Attendance, Leads, D B W, Networking. • Sit with New Member a minimum of four regular meetings, introduce to other members • Encourage participation in social functions‘ & committees • Encourage feedback and refer any problems or concerns to membership chair’s committee, or EEA Executive Director. • *Complete Mentor Questionnaire at end of 3 month period • Associate Members – your firm’s Primary member is expected to be your mentor. • Ask for a Mentor if you’d like one!

  10. Code of Conduct Confidentiality: We will treat Leads & other information provided by members as highly confidential. Classifications: We will be respectful of other member’s classifications. Behavior: We will foster a respectful and professional EEA environment. Responsibility: We all have a responsibility to the EEA and our fellow members. Please remember to do your due diligence when dealing with members, especially until a relationship is formed

Good Lead Sources • Personal, and business News. • Earlier, Better – should not be copied from newspapers, construction reports, • Rumors are not printed, think twice before verbalizing at the meeting • Confidentiality – members only • Do not infringe on other’s classifications • One on one visit to another member’s firm counts as a Mini Visit = 1 lead

Classification Talks & Scheduling • Coordination of Craft/Classification Talks done by Program Chair. • Two Craft Talks per Friday meeting scheduled, each 15 minutes in duration. • Power cables, screens, projector can be coordinated by Executive Director with the Royal Glenora Club. Lap tops, and other equipment are the responsibility of the member. • New Members are given at least three months before scheduling of their first Craft Talk. • 4-6 Site Visitations per year may be scheduled, with up to $1000. paid by EEA to supplement the visitation. • Four Huddle Sessions will be held per year in lieu of Craft talks. • “Special Interest Speakers,” are occasionally brought in when the opportunity is available.

Social Events Annually – Sanctioned & Organized by EEA Committee Hockey Game Golf Tournament Fall Social Christmas Party UnsanctionedOrganized by Interested Parties, Not EEA Poker Night: Ladies Lunch Hunting Trip Ski Trip The Executive Director is a ‘part time’ position which does not include organizing Social events or extra circular activities. It is important for members to volunteer!

  14. Attendance, Leads, Confidentiality, Sunshine, Probationary Period • Each member is to maintain an attendance level of a minimum of 75% or higher. Efficiency must be 65% or better. Failure to do this can result in membership suspension • Leads: 10 leads per month & Did Business With: 8 per month • Efficiency: 1/3 leads, 1/3 attendance, 1/3 did business with • Confidentiality • Newsletter & Leads are for Member s Only. Individual leads can be cut & pasted to Employees of the Company ONLY. Do not use the name of member without checking first. • Sunshine • Announcement of birthdays, anniversaries, and other notable accomplishments and personal member information. The purpose is to make note of significant milestones in each of our lives, which helps to generate conversation and create new friendships.

Common Issues for New MembersProbationary Period & Poor Quality Leads • Probationary Period is 6 months to complete all of the above however in reality, all members are on Probation all the time. • Difference between General & Direct Leads – not just specific lead but also used for confidential or rumor info • Mini visitations – one on one visit helps understand other companies better • Poor Quality Leads • Leads should be Unpublished – NOT from ECA newsletter, newspapers or industry publications • Occasional Sales pitch is fine but not every week • Personal items such as car or house sales should be put into Leads Sheet but not verbalized at meetings

  18. How it Began • 1916 - San Francisco - 8 business friends got together to exchange business leads over lunch. One month later they had over 100 members. Edmonton started in 1925 • 2006 – 120+ EA’s worldwide, almost half are dues paying IEA Chapter members representing 3500 firms • IEA chapter members are listed on the IEA website and can be found by searching the Company Directory

  19. IEA Organization • First Directors Conference in 1937 but until 1996, no IEA structure • The internet has made it easy, and free to contact members from across the continent. • $15 per company per year comes out of your annual EEA dues

Betty & IEA • Part of my job description as Executive Director for Edmonton is to “be the liaison between EEA and IEA”. • 1998 to 2003 I served on the IEA Board as the North West Regional ED Rep & Secretary. • December 2004 I was hired as the Managing Director of the IEA, a part time position which takes about 10 hours a week.

How to Make IEA Work for You • Visit other EA chapters when traveling, it counts as ‘attending that week’ at EEA • Contact other IEA members of your classification…you never know where it might lead – Jackson von der Ohe purchased the HVA member from Nanaimo. Richard Pierson, who has temporary locations in malls for his 4 or 5 toy stores has asked advice from Cindy McFall , Akron member & current IEA President who also utilizes temporary mall space for her chain of over 80 stores. • Stay at the member hotels – listed in the monthly Newsletter. L last year on the way to the IEA conference recently a group of us stayed at the EAFL hotel member Lago Mar in Ft Lauderdale who upgraded us to magnificent suites! • Attend – attend an IEA Conference – face to face networking always works BEST!
