  1. LOU radiator HIFI Consortium meeting April 2004 P.L.van Leeuwen

  2. Contents • Mechanical design • Thermal design • ICD • Production / Planning

  3. Mechanical design • Stress analysis necessitated some design modifications : • Design damping factor 0.02 • Thermal links to be connected to lateral stringers • Extra stiffening of radiator endcaps required • Modification of thermal link stiffening • 1 lateral stiffener extended • Design modifications have no impact on LOR interfaces • Present stress analysis (sinus loads) shows minimum MoS -0.6 at peaks around 70 Hz (radiators own eigenfrequency) and MoS > 5.3 at 40 Hz (LO system frequency) • Present stress analysis (random loads) shows minimum MoS> 6 Further in-depth discussion needed with ESA and Astrium about design modifications and verification approach

  4. Geometric changes Middle stiffener is elongated over complete panel

  5. Geometric changes End of thermal links are connected to stiffener

  6. Geometric changes A flange of 10 [mm] wide is added to the endcaps

  7. sinusoidal vibration (lateral) Von Mises stress distribution On several regions the stress exceeds the yield stress (210 [Mpa])

  8. sinusoidal vibration (lateral) Maximum von Mises stress of about 500 [Mpa] at top of stiffeners near thermal links

  9. sinusoidal vibration (lateral) Conclusions Without notching the maximum stress at the first eigenfrequency is about 550 [MPa] at the top of the stringers. The following Margins of Safety are obtained (without notching):

  10. Thermal design • Current analysis shows the following temperatures : • LOA temperatures cold case 117 K • LOA temperatures hot case 128 K • Comparison with simple Astrium thermal model revealed some deficiencies on both sides. • Expected temperature effects of model modifications is approx. + 5-6 degr C. • Final thermal analysis will wait for on-going design changes and measured optical properties • No MLI foreseen on radiator

  11. Case 1 (cold) temperature distribution

  12. Case 1 (cold) temperature distribution

  13. Case 2 (hot)temperature distribution

  14. Case 2 (hot)temperature distribution

  15. ICD (to be updated)

  16. Production firm is ready to start All materials available Use of Alodine 1000 Use of black paint PUK, to be applied by MAP Production drawings 2 weeks after decision to continue with present design Production + 3 weeks Surface treatment + 3 weeks Ready for delivery wk 27 ?
