  1. Nate Frailey Purav Patel Anne Urish Pat Walsh October 15, 2010

  2. Primary goal was to design a sustainable, energy efficient home able to withstand the Pennsylvania environment

  3. Primary features of ZEH were the solar panels, south facing windows, and ground source heat pump Cost Savings of $14.4 /Mbtu compared to Conventional Oil Heating!

  4. The basic features of our home include a Solar Water Heater, 9.8 kW PV System, and a GSHP among other things • Energy Star Approved • Concrete Slab Floor • Vinyl Siding • Solar Curtains

  5. Using a combination of energy saving techniques created the most powerful effect • Solar Panels • PV System • Ground Source Heat Pump • Energy Star Appliances • Solar Water Heater

  6. A strong 13.2kW Photo Voltaic System allows the house to absorb, use, and store energy efficiently • Converts sunlight into electricity

  7. The Ground Source Heat Pump saves money on heating and has an efficiency of 4 • Only costs $6.6/Mbtu • $.09/Fuel Unit

  8. All appliances used are Energy Star therefore increasing the cost savings annually

  9. Additional features that help save energy include a concrete slab floor, wall insulation, solar curtains, etc.

  10. The front of the house contains a living room, garage, dining room, etc.

  11. The back contains a deck, garden, and the four rooms on the second floor

  12. The back also contains the solar panels on the roof and large windows to let the sunlight in

  13. Sun slide at the first day of Summer (June 21)

  14. Sun slide at the beginning of class Oct 15

  15. Sun slide on the first day of winter (Dec 21)

  16. Physical view of the first floor and backyard

  17. Physical view of the second floor and Front Yard

  18. Greatest challenges faced were dimensioning the house and interior space while also incorporating energy efficient features

  19. Another challenge was creating the house physically, and having the floors match up
