  1. Good news! Grk: euangelion = good news or a good message Mark 1:1 – “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Mark 1:14-15 – “Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.””

  2. A common understanding of the gospel • God loves us • We have all sinned • Sin leads to death • God sent Jesus to die for our sins • He took God’s judgment in our place • Need to be born again • Receive Jesus into our lives by faith • New life • Forgiveness and eternal life • Heaven

  3. So much more! Paul outlines the gospel in the first half of his letter to the Romans He reaches the ‘mountaintop’ of the good news in chapter 8

  4. So much more! • No condemnation • Set free from the law of sin and death • Free to walk by the Spirit rather than the flesh • God’s Spirit lives within us • Helps us put to death the deeds of the sinful deeds of the flesh • He affirms us as God’s children – now sons of God who are able to call God ‘Abba’ • Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ

  5. So much more! • Incomparable glory to be revealed in us • God’s Spirit intercedes for us • God works in everything for our good • God will give us all things in Christ • No-one can condemn us • Nothing can separate us from God’s love • More than conquerors

  6. But one thing left out ….. Conformed to the image of God’s Son Romans 8:29: “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren.” Grk: summorphous = conformed, of the same form or appearance

  7. Other scriptures confirm this reality …. Same Greek word used in Philippians 3:20-21: “But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to belike His glorious body” 1 Corinthians 15:49: “Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven” Grk: eikona = exact likeness

  8. Other scriptures confirm this reality …. 1 John 3:2: “Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” Grk: homoio = made like, resemble We shall be like Him!

  9. How is this possible? God’s seed – His DNA has been planted in our hearts at new birth 1 John 3:9: “No-one born of God commits sin [continues to practise sin]; for God’s nature abides in him.” Grk: sperma = seed, semen See also 1 Peter 1:23

  10. How is this possible? 2 Peter 1:3-4: “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature.” Grk: koinonoi = partakers, sharing in

  11. So how do we respond to this amazing ‘Good News’? Romans 12:1-2: “I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Grk: metamorphousthe = totally changed / transfigured

  12. So how do we respond to this amazing ‘Good News’? Ephesians 4:22-24: “Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Grk: ananeousthe = inwardly renewed
