IT Simplification & TransformationMichael Droe
  • Michael has been an active member of the preK-Adult education technology community for more than 25 years with 20 of these in information and education technology management. Most recently, he served in the capacity of Chief Technology Officer for the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, near Los Angeles. His division was responsible for the research, development and deployment of learning and information technologies including networking & communications, software development, facility technologies and educational television.
  • During this time, several project partnerships with large and innovative technology corporations served to define and develop innovative technology programs and initiatives for the connected K-14 community. The models established by these programs, including a district-wide broadband network with converged voice, video and data, have been reviewed and adopted both nationally and internationally by other agencies and learning institutions including those from the Michigan State Dept. of Education; and institutions in Sweden, South Africa and New Zealand.
  • In 1997, Michael was recognized with a Computerworld-Smithsonian award for the visionary use of Information Technology in Academia. A case study of his work in community networking is registered as part of the Permanent Research Collection on the history of Information Technology Innovation at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History. Most recently, he was recognized as Administrator of the Year at the 2008 Digital Voice Awards hosted by the Los Angeles County Office of Education for innovative work on a large 1-to-1 student laptop program.

One-to-One (1:1) vs. Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD)

  • One-to-one models typically involve a school/district-provided device.
  • BYOD models typically involve a student or parent-provided and maintained device.
  • All BYOD models typically includes (or requires) a supporting 1:1 model.
  • The learning, operational requirements and impacts for both programs to the classroom, school/building and infrastructure are similar.
  • BYOD programs generally have greater standardization challenges while 1:1 programs have greater logistical challenges.
  • 1:1 models can be in-school/in-class programs or individually assigned.
