Text-based main events may include, but are not limited to: Ray listened to music in Mr. Pitman’s café / began paying attention to music as soon as he could walk and talk / loved music starting at age 3. He dreamed of making a record / playing at Carnegie Hall / having a big band of his own / meeting the president. In the 1930s most black people didn’t have many opportunities to make their dreams come true. Ray and his mother were poor. By the time he was 7, he was nearly blind. His mother sent him to St. Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind to learn Braille / to learn to read / learn to write. He learned to play piano at St. Augustine’s. He listened to big-band music at St. Augustine’s. His mother died when he was 15 / he stopped eating, sleeping, playing music. Ma Beck told him to stop feeling sorry for himself. He began playing piano in nightclubs. He began experimenting with different music / wanted to sing country and western. His friends tried to talk him out of singing country and western. He made a country and western album that drew blacks and whites to concerts. He played in Carnegie Hall. He’s had a band of his own. He performed for the president. He has won countless awards as a musician and a humanitarian. He has become one of the most accomplished performers of popular music.
