  2. CATPAC • Can be used on any text, one text at a time • Save as “text only” document ( .txt ) • Essentially, program creates “dendograms” of text

  3. Output File • Shows the total word count. • Also lists the total count of what the program considers “unique”words ( usually the top 15 to 30 words, but as many as 200 words; default is set to 25 words) • Lists frequent words in descending frequency as well as alphabetically • Shows relationship between most commonly occurring concepts.

  4. CatpacReading Output • Default on window is set at seven( can be adjusted). • Dendogram output is “Wards Method”. • Simple - groups like concepts/words together in an easy to read output file.

  5. These graphs give an interesting 3-D view of grouped concepts formed from the dendogram. Perceptual maps can give a better picture of how like ideas and words are clustered together. Perceptual Graphs

  7. MCCALite • Measures the frequency of words • Two types of dictionary scores – “E”Scores (emphasis) and “C”-Scores (context) • Recommended to be used on on plays, screenplays, etc.

E Scores • 116 E Score categories • Scores represent the meaning or ideas that each word is expected to represent in language. • Scores are positive and negative. • Positive scores represent ideas that are emphasized in the text. • Negative scores represent ideas that are not in the text • Problems with slang?

  9. C Scores • Analysis of the context each word is used in. • Four types • Practical • Traditional • Emotional • Analytic

  11. Issues with Program • Problems: • Formatting text • Ambiguous instructions • Output defaulted to generic numerical values. • Cannot print output.

  12. Formating • Must be a text file! • Must be in a script format • Must designate the start of the text with "=" • Must end the text with "$" • More details?
