  2. A Visitor My name’s Samuel. Lenny Samuel. You can call me Len. I’m a private eye. A private eye is a private detective- a detective who will work for anyone who will pay him. I’m not a policeman. I work on my own as a private eye. In the inner room, there’s a cheap wooden desk. There’s a big wooden chair for me to sit on and, on the opposite side of the desk, there’s a low metal chair for my visitors. The rest of the furniture in my office consists of a large, empty metal cupboard, and a low bed in one corner. When there is a lot of work, I sometimes sleep in the office. The notice outside my door says: “L. Samuel. Private Detective.” That’s me Suddenly, I heard someone walk into the outer room. I always leave the door of the outer room open, in case anyone wants to come in and see me. When I heard the footsteps in the outer room, I wasn’t very surprised.

  3. Please Find My Sister ‘I see’, I sad. ‘Your sister has disappeared. Have you reported her disappearance to the police?’ ‘No, I haven’t told the police,’ she sad. ‘I don’t want any trouble with the police. I just want you to help find my sister.’ ‘All right,’ I said. ‘Tell me all about your sister.’ ‘Her name is Elaine Garfield,’ said the girl. ‘And what’s your name?’ I interrupted. ‘Helen Garfield’, she replied. ‘ My sister disappeared a week ago. We had arranged to have dinner together last Monday night, but she didn’t come.’ ‘I waited for my sister last Monday evening, in my hotel,’ said the girl.’ But she didn’t come. I telephoned her, but there was no answer. Then I went to her office and they said, that she had been to work on Monday and then she suddenly left. After that I went to her flat but there was no one there. I’m very worried and I want you to find her.” “I’ll find her”, I said.

  4. The Manson Building After the blonde girl had left my office, I looked at the two addresses which she had written on the piece of paper. I went to the place that was written there: The Manson building. I asked about Elaine Garfield there and the porter led me to her apartment.

  5. A Very Tidy Apartment I rang the bell beside the door of Apartment 716 and waited. There was no answer. I rang again, but there was still no answer. Then I look a small, square piece of plastic out of my pocket. I looked around. I was alone. I pushed the piece of plastic into the space between the door and the door frame and moved the plastice up and down. In a minute, the door openedand I went into the flat.

  6. I looked round the room carefully, but there were no interesting things there. So I switched off the light and tried to leave. But I couldn’t.

  7. Suzy Suzy put on her coat and we left the office together. We found a little café, just opposite the Title-Insurance Building. In the café, I told Suzy why I was asking questions about Elaine Garfield.

  8. Benny Greep I decided to go to Las Cabanas. It was a pure dirty club, but my aim was to find out everything about Benny Greep. A man who was working there gave me Bennie’s address. I went to the flat and found his dead body.

  9. Arrested for Murder I called the police and they came in a few minutes after that. They asked me who I am and who is my director but of course I only told them that I’m a private eye. They took me to the police station/ They thought I was a murder.

  10. Sergeant Murphy Sergeant Murphy came to talk to me. He shouted very much and every time he was telling me that he hates private detectives and he hates me the most of all. He didn’t let me go home.

  11. The Yellow Car I’d seen Sergeant Murphy once more, during the afternoon. It hadn’t been a pleasant meeting. I hadn’t told the sergeant who I was working for. And I hadn’t told him why I’d wanted to talk to Benny Greep.

  12. Las Cabanas I met Helen Garfield at Las cabanas and told her everything that happened yesterday. She was shocked and I asked her too many questions. She went out and tolm me she woud come back soon.

  13. Helen Garfield Leaves Helen didn’t come back. I asked the waiter about her and found out that she have left 15 minutes ago. I was upset about it and decided to go home.
