Content Management Systems • What is a CMS? • It is a software that allow someone to create, organize and publish content that may containtext, photos, videos, etc. • The main advantage is that it is NOT necessary to know a programming language or HTML/CSS which is needed in order to create pages (web sites) for WWW.

Advantages of CMS • No Technical or Programming Skills • Easy to Learn and Easy to Use • Publish a Web Site with Free or Small Costin Minutes or days. • Security is included • Can be easily extended with more features • Many Con-current Users(All modern web sites are built upon a CMS) • Users can have Different Roles(Access Levels)

  4. Creating a Web Site WITHOUT CMS • HTML + CSS + Programming Language (ex. PHP, Javascript, etc)

  5. Build a Web Site WITH CMS • Users use an Editor • All Programming Code (HTML,CSS, PHP, etc) are handled and build by the CMS without users need to know. • All Content are Separated from Code and it is organized into a Databases (ex. MySQL)

  6. POPULAR CMS • Drupal • Joomla • Wordpress • Blogger • Concrete5 • Moodle (for e-learning) • Magento (for eshops) • PrestaShop (for eshops) • OpenCart (for eshops)

Wordpress • Begin at 2003 as a bloging platform • Today the most famous CMSwith more that 30% of all Internet web sites created with it!!!(https://trends.builtwith.com/cms) • It is used not only for blogging but for Business web sites, News Portals, E-Shops, Forums, etc • Has a very large Community • Huge number of Plugins to extend featuresToday 50.000!!! (https://wordpress.org/plugins/)

  8. Web Sites with Wordpress • Free via Wordpress.com Example: myfreewebsite.wordpress.com • Disadvantage is the limited space and plugins! • Free Download and install Wordpress for your domain and Web Server. It is very Easy! Example: www.mywebsite.gr • Disadvantage is security!

Wordpress Users Roles • Administrators – Full Access to do everything and to install plugins. • Editor – has access to all posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and links. • Author – can write, upload photos to, edit, and publish their own posts. • Contributor – but can write and edit their own postsuntil they are published (no publishing or uploading capability). • Follower (public sites) / Viewer (private sites only) – can read and comment on posts and pages.

Wordpress at School • Wordpress platform is ideal for school projects. • Web site is created in minutes and can easily invite students to contribute. • Teacher can use for students the Contributor Roleif they like to approve students content before publishing. Student view and edit only their post. They cannot upload photos or files into wordpress. • Or use Author or Editor Role if they like students to publish content and review them later. Students can use “Pending review” options if they want to get approval of a post.
