  4. Writing a Topic Sentence • How does the advertiser attempt to influence the target audience? • Here is an example: In this print advertisement, Nike attempts to influence the target audience, men/boys who play sports, through vivid images and persuasive language.

  5. Providing Evidence and Commentary • In your analytical paragraph, you must support your topic sentence with specific detail from the ad, as well as commentary that explains the importance of the detail.

  6. Providing Evidence & Commentary Example: The advertisement shows an image of LeBron James running down the court to attempt a slam dunk, capturing the reader’s attention by showing a celebrity in action.

  7. Providing Evidence & Commentary • The Nike ad also uses the headline “Will to Win”. By using the headline “Will to Win” and the image of this basketball icon, this ad attempts to influence the audience because James is a successful NBA player. This ad shows his will to win the game.

  8. Providing Evidence & Commentary • This ad also uses the text, “You will notice. You will scream. Because you want it to happen.” These words show the target audience the drive and determination of Nike. The advertisement wants to convey that Nike is the BEST shoe for winning the game.
