Sitting Bull was born in Grand River 1831 in the Plains area of the United States. He was a Sioux Indian. His tribe, the Hunkpapa, lived on the Great Northern Plains where they hunted buffalo.
Interesting facts… “Slow”, Sitting Bull’s old name, went to war when he was just a boy with no weapons - just a coup stick. When he was ten years old he killed his first buffalo. After he fought and won against a Crow warrior, he was renamed Sitting Bull.
Accomplishments He was an Indian chief in the Battle of Little Big Horn. Sitting Bull was famous after this battle and he later joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Sitting Bull College in Standing Rock, North Dakota serves many students today.

Jim Thorpe Gaven Aulds
Jim was born in May, 1888 in Oklahoma. His parents were Hiram Thorpe and Charlotte Viuex. He had a twin brother named Charlie.
Interesting facts… • In Jim’s growing up years he and his brother Charlie went to school and played ball all the time at recess. But one winter his brother, Charlie, got sick and died. Without Charlie, Jim didn’t care about ball games. So Jim ran away from school, but his father made him go back. His mother died when he was just 15 years old. Soon Jim became a sports guy and he won medals at the Olympic Games.
Accomplishments • He was a pro football player who played with President Eisenhower when they were both attending West Point. • Jim Thorpe represented the United States in the Olympics of 1912 in Sweden. • He won the decathlon which is a series of ten contests.

Amelia Earhart was always thinking about planes and how to fly them. When Amelia Earhart was a little girl her sister, Muriel, helped her make an airplane out of wood. They put it on the roof with Amelia inside it, and slid down the roof to make it fly.
Interesting facts… • Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison Kansas. • She was born on July 24th, 1898. • She died in 1937. • Her dad’s name was Samuel Edwin Stanton Earhart and her mom’s name was Amelia Amy Otis Earhart.
Accomplishments • She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. • She was invited to the White House by President Hoover to receive a medal from the National Geographic Society.

Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on February 4, 1913. Her parents were Leona and James McCauley. She had one brother named Sylvester. Rosa Parks died on October 24, 2005.
