Patient injuries in Norway • Population in Norway: 4 980 000 • NorwegianKnowledge Centre for Health Services is responsible for the first investigationonpatient injuries ever done in Norway • 15% of all patients in 2010 weredamaged in the hospital • 10 % ofdeaths last yearwerecaused by hospital errors = 4,500 deaths • Probably half ofthedeaths (2000 patients) could have beenavoidedwithbetterpractices, better hygiene, and withhigherpriorityofthepatient’ssafety.

Acceptable or not? • Norway has oneoftheworld’s best healthcare system • One of the countries spending the most money on health pr. citizen in the world • 130 billion NOK were spent on healthcare in 2010 (390 billion CZK ) • The figureswereexpectedaftercomparingwithinternationalnumbers • 2000 deathsthatcould have beeneasilyavoided: A reasonablenumber or unacceptable?
