5. 1st Paragraph: Introduction • This is the paragraph where you draw the reader into your paper, state your argument (thesis), and layout the rest of your paper • Essential Elements of an Introduction: • Attention getter • Could be a quote, rhetorical question, statistic… • Background Information • This is where you introduce the topic that you will be writing about and very briefly discuss the background information of that topic • Thesis • This is where you state your argument and layout the rest of your paper • Although New England and the Chesapeake region of Virginia were both settled primarily by the British in the seventeenth century they developed into very different societies economically, socially, and politically. • Your thesis should answer the essay prompt!!!!! • Underline your thesis

6. 2nd Paragraph: Body Paragraph #1 • The purpose of the body paragraphs is for you to argue and prove your thesis with effective analysis of the documents (if writing a DBQ) and with outside information • Look at the thesis again: • Although New England and the Chesapeake region of Virginia were both settled primarily by the British in the seventeenth century they developed into very different societies economically, socially, and politically. • This first paragraph must be about the economies of New England AND Virginia, why? • Because I mentioned the economy first in my thesis • You need to have two to three facts, and analysis of those facts, for each body paragraph • I.e. two to three facts about the economy, AND the society, AND the politics

7. 3rd Paragraph: Body Paragraph #2 • This second paragraph must be about the society of New England AND Virginia, why? • Because I mentioned the social aspect second in my thesis

8. 4th Paragraph: Body Paragraph #3 • This third paragraph must be about the politics of New England AND Virginia, why? • Because I mentioned the politics third in my thesis

9. 5th Paragraph: Conclusion • This is where you wrap your paper up and give it a sense of closure • Essential Elements: • Re-state your thesis in a different way • Addresses the question So What? [assigns importance] • Exit sentence - try to foreshadow what is to come in the future or what your argument means for the history of the United States • Leaves the reader with a sense that you know how this argument fits into the “big picture” of history
