Agenda 1. Reviewing Vignettes 2. Group Reading: 23 & 25 3. Partner Persuasive Essay • Take out a piece of paper – put everyone’s name at the top. Assignment: Table Group Discussions • In groups of 4 (using your Jigsaw Vignette Summaries) quickly go over again the short stories or “vignettes” that Steinbeck has used. • Create a plot structure for Cannery Row, write the main plot on top of the and then add the vignettes in between events. • How have the vignettes meant something? Reflect on the Reading
Group Reading – Chapter 23, 25 & 27 What is Mack & the Boys plan for redemption? Do you think it will work? What does Doc mean when he says the boys are “True Philosophers”?
Assignment: Write a vignette in which you recapture a moment of time (length requirement, 300-500words). • Concentrate on details. This is not a narrative essay. Unlike an essay, there will be neither an introduction nor a conclusion. • There will be less telling, more showing. (For example, NOT: Mary was nervous. YES: Mary had butterflies in her stomach; her hands were cold and clammy.) • Using words, create images that appeal to the senses. • Add details, dialogue, and embellish (you can fictionalize what happened to make it a “better” story.) Let the essence of the story be true, but add what you need to add to make your point. • You will have approximately 20 minutes to complete your story. Writing Workshop
