  1. Orthodontics Treatment Risks: How to Prevent them? Orthodontist works towards straightening your teeth to correct malocclusion, overbite, underbite etc. While this might sound simple, the treatment comes with its inherent risks. Taking preventive measures can help in better oral health. What is orthodontics? Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry in which the dentist treats the problem of misaligned/malpositioned teeth and jaws. Braces, Invisalign, mouthguards etc are some of the appliances used in orthodontics.

  2. What are the risks involved in orthodontics treatment and how to prevent them? 1.Dental decays: Brushing can help in bidding adieu to numerous dental problems. But with braces, brushing becomes a herculean task and this ultimately leads to tooth decay, teeth discolouration etc. Preventive measure: You can overcome this problem by using an orthodontic toothbrush and fluoride mouthwash. 2.Root resorption: Braces push the teeth in a way that pressure is exerted on the jawbone for realignment and adaptation to the changes. This might lead to the shortening and resorption of the jawbone. Preventive measure: The dentist must take an X-ray of the teeth to find out if the jawbone is short or not to suggest the treatment. Another preventive measure to overcome this issue is to maintain a healthy oral regime. 3.Allergic reactions: Swelling and itching in the gums and even asthma is reported after orthodontic treatment. Preventive measure: Talking to the dentist about food allergies is a must before the treatment begins. 4.Loss of tooth enamel: Since dental braces will stay on your teeth for not less than 12 months, loss of tooth enamel is natural during this time. Preventive measure: Reduce sugar intake and brush with an orthodontic toothbrush twice a day. 5.Periodontal diseases: Mouth ulcers are common after orthodontic treatment. Preventive measure: Visiting the dentist and taking proper medication can help reduce the problem.
