  3. God is a Jealous God How is God Jealous? God’s nature has not changed! While His attributes may be manifested differently in varying circumstances, He is the same God as always

  4. God is a Jealous God How is God Jealous? His jealousy is not like the jealousy of man Man often manifests ungodly attitudes and actions – suspicion, despising, competitive, seeking harm, etc. Galatians 5:20, 2 Corinthians 12:20, James 3:14-16

  5. God is a Jealous God How is God Jealous? Examples are always linked to idolatry or man choosing something over Him. Rebellion grieves Him – 1 Samuel 15:23, Proverbs 17:11 God is both good and severe – Romans 11:22 Vengeance belongs to Him – Romans 12:19, Hebrews 12:29

  6. God is a Jealous God How is God Jealous? He demands faithfulness, in the same way a spouse has the right to expect faithfulness. When one is unfaithful, God is grieved and desires the he return to Him. He KNOWS the motives and consequences of evil and seeks to bring one back When we refuse to return, we will face His wrath

  7. By following other gods? • This was the primary way He is provoked • Exodus 20:3-5, 34:12-14 – making a covenant with the inhabitants of the land • 1 Kings 14:22-24 – Rehoboam leading Judah into idolatry Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

  8. By following other gods? • We are to avoid idolatry • Idolatry is anything one puts before God • 1 Corinthians 10:14 – flee from idolatry • 1 John 5:21 – keep yourselves from idols • Ephesians 5:3-5Colossians 3:5 Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

  9. When we fail to give God the glory • God demands reverence • “Godliness” – 1 Timothy 4:8, 2 Peter 1:6-7 • Whatever we do, we are to give God the glory – 1 Corinthians 10:31 • Far too few desire to seek God – society has turned against Him Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

  10. When we fail to give God the glory • Having a form of godliness – 2 Timothy 3:5 • Psalm 36:1, Romans 3:18 • Acts 12:21 – Herod struck • Romans 1:20-25 – God gave them over • But there are consequences2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

  11. When we fail to give God the glory • Another example when we won’t stand up for Him – John 12:42-43 • Matthew 10:32-33 when we deny Him • When we fail to stand up for Him, He is jealous Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

  12. When we do things our way • Leviticus 10:1-3, Nadab and Abihu • Genesis 3:2-3, 22-24 – Adam and Eve • 1 Samuel 15:22-23 – Saul’s excuses • Jeremiah 2:13 – broken cisterns • Colossians 3:17 Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

When we leave and return to the world • While the world has no fear of God, many fail to emphasize the need to remain faithful (cf. “once saved, always saved”) • Revelation 2:10, 14:13 – We are called upon to remain faithful until we die • 2 Peter 2:20-11Luke 9:621 John 2:15-17 – when we love the world, God is not in us Do we provoke God to Jealousy?

  14. When we are caught up in immorality or ungodliness • 1 Kings 14:22-24 – there were also perverted persons in the land • Jude 7 – Sodom and Gomorrah • 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 – God expects us to live moral lives Do we provoke God to Jealousy?
