  2. 1865-1870 1865 - American Civil War ends - Lincoln was assassinated 1867 - Alaska was purchased 1870 - Texas becomes last confederate state readmitted to Union

  3. 1871-1880 1873 - 43rd Congress has 7 black members 1875 - Federal troops sent to Vicksburg to protect blacks - Civil Rights Act passed - 44th Congress has 8 black members 1876 -Deal made to withdraw troops from South 1880 - Univ. of Southern CA was found

  4. 1881-1890 1881 -Clara Barton organizes American Red Cross - Some commercial vehicles are required to display liscense 1883 - Civil Rights act of 1875 declared unconstitutional 1889 - Washington admitted as a state - Prudence Crandall died 1890 - Wilber and Orville Wright print the “Dayton Tattler” in Dayton, Ohio

  5. 1891-1900 1891 - Carnegie Hall opens in New York 1892 - James Naismith publishes basketball rules 1893 - The New York stock exchange collapses 1895 - 1st professional football game played in Latrobe, PA 1897 - Tomb of Ulysses S. Grant dedicated in New York 12 years after his death 1900 - Theodore Roosevelt is vice president

  9. 1931-1940 1931 - State of Nevada legalizes gambling - Star-Spangled Banner is approved by Hoover and Congress as national anthem 1932 - Highest continuous pave road in U.S. is opened 1933 - Pres. Roosevelt inaugurated for 1st time 1935 - Babe Ruth retires from baseball 1940 - The Great Smokey Mountains National Park is dedicated by Franklin D. Roosevelt

  10. 1941-1950 1943 - Race riots in Detroit and Harlem cause 40 deaths and 700 injuries 1945 - President Roosevelt succumbs to a brain hemorrhage 1946 - Basketball Assoc. of America is founded 1947 - Jackie Robinson breaks Major League Baseball’s barrier against colored players 1949 - U.S. withdraws troops from Korea 1950 - Brinks robbery in Boston occurs when 11 bandits steal 2.8 mill from armed car

  11. 1951-1960 1951 - Australia, New Zealand, and U.S. sign a mutual security pact 1953 - 1st colored T.V. goes on sale - Dwight Eisenhower is inaugurated 34th president 1958 - Explorer I, the 1st American satellite is launched 1959 - Alaska becomes 49th state and Hawaii 50th 1960 - Olympics were held in Rome

  12. 1961-1970 1961 - John F. Kennedy moves into White House 1962 - John Glenn becomes 1st man to orbit the Earth 3 times 1963 - Martin Luther King gives his “I Have A Dream” speech 1966 - Walt Disney dies of cancer on 12/15 1967 - First heart transplant was performed 1970 - Beatles break up

  13. 1971-1980 1971 - London Bridge brought to U.S. - VCRs introduced 1972 - M*A*S*H T.V. show premieres - Pocket calculators introduced
