Positive health status of young people • Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIWH) conduct Young Australians: Their health and well-being report for statistics • Health is improving, life expectancy is increasing, decrease in mortality rates • Decrease in injuries, suicide and transport accidents.

  3. Continual decline of death rates 12-24y/o

  4. Self assessment of health • Nearly 70% aged 15-24 rated health as excellent or very good. • Another 24% rated good. • So almost 94% of 15-24 rated health as excellent, very good or good. BUT • The AIHW Survey found 35% of this age group overweight or obese (BMI) • 5% meet nutrition guidelines

  6. Assessment (Physical Health) • Motor vehicle accidents and self harm are the biggest causes of death and hospitalization. • Chronic diseases ↑ • Diabetes • Crohns disease (gastrointestinal inflammation) • Potentially debilitating conditions ↑ • Meningitis • Hepatitis C • Chlamydia

  7. Assessment (mental health) • Mental health disorders were the biggest contributor to burden of disease. • Depression ) • Anxiety ) = 75% of total • Substance abuse ) • ↑ high levels of distress • 35% of these high level distresses reported their health as fair to poor.

Protective behaviours and risk behaviours • Protective behaviours – a behaviours that will enhance a persons level of health. • Come up with 3 examples • Risk behaviours – contribute to the development of health problems or poor overall health. • Come up with 3 examples Q - Why are these protective and risk important to adolescence and their development?

The effect of multiple protective or risk behaviors • Certain health behaviors can often be associated with each other, increasing the risks or benefits young people face. • The presence of multiple risk factors can increase the level of harm that a young person might experience. • Multiple protective factors will reduce health risks and individual experiences. • Examples of each?
