  1. Education and Training Inspectorate Inspection of Governance

  2. Minister’s statement I will examine how we can broaden and strengthen the existing inspection process to enable the effectiveness of boards of governors to be assessed so that governors can have feedback on how they are doing and good practice can be identified and shared.

  3. Inspecting governance • Together Towards Improvement (TTI) : Strategic Leadership: • How effective are SMT/leadership including the Governing Body/Management Committee in providing strategic leadership and clear direction in achieving high quality education and/or training?

  4. Inspectors may consider • governors’ strategic view – clarity of vision, culture and values • the quality of self-evaluation process • governors’ knowledge of the work of the school; its strengths and AfI; how they monitor and evaluate performance and improvement plans; their role in setting priorities • how well they understand performance data; have an accurate picture of performance against benchmarks and for different groups of learners

  5. Inspectors may considerthe extent to which governors: • ensure targets are achievable, challenging and are leading to sustained improvement • hold leaders to account for improvement by robustly challenging underperformance • know the challenges e.g. attendance and behaviour issues, and how being addressed • manage school funds effectively • skills complement those of the LT • attend meetings; ensure accurate minutes are kept and actions followed up
