Let’s talk oil • In Asia oil prices neared $76 (July 12) • Oil prices rose as investor’s fears about a double dip recession begin to ease • Oil investors look to equities as a barometer of overall investor sentiment • Heating oil was up 0.35 cents to $2.029 a gallon • Natural gas rose 1.8 cents to $4,420 per 1,000 cubic feet

Recovery, Recovery, Recovery • South Korea’s central bank raised country’s economic growth from 5.2 % to 5.9 % • Global economy, IT industry, stronger purchasing power • Investors are saying that stocks just got too cheap to resist • Senior economist at CIBC World Markets: “The economy is running on two cylinders but the risk of a double dip recession has fallen”

Jobs outlook in NY • Goldman Sachs added 600 jobs – 1st quarter (global) • JPM’s investment bank – 2,000 jobs worldwide (2010) • Credit Suisse’s investment bank – 600 jobs (1st quarter) • Deutsche Bank – 414 jobs in NY (ttm) • Nomura’s New York-based securities unit – 700 (ttm) • Macquarie – hired 6 fixed-income traders in NY • Centerview Partners – 10 bankers from 65 (2010)

Japan’s political troubles • Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s Democratic Party of Japan only won 44 seats in the Upper house • The opposing party (Liberal Democratic Party) won 51 • The Lower House is controlled by the DPJ while the Upper House is controlled by the LDP • Bills/Legislation will be harder to pass in Japan • Nikkei down 0.4 %

  9. Google.cn • China has renewed Google’s license to operate in China for at least 1 more year • Google has agreed to stop rerouting to its site in Hong Kong, which is not subject to China’s online censorship • Google wants to remain in China due to an estimated $15 to $20 billion market
