BELLWORK

BELLWORK. TAKE OUT YOUR CELL PARTS BOOK. What does ‘semi-permeable’ mean? What is the purpose of the cell membrane? How does the ‘bouncer’ know who to let in and who not to? How is your data collection going?. As you watch, jot down info. on slate.

  1. BELLWORK TAKE OUT YOUR CELL PARTS BOOK. • What does ‘semi-permeable’ mean? • What is the purpose of the cell membrane? • How does the ‘bouncer’ know who to let in and who not to? • How is your data collection going?

  2. As you watch, jot down info. on slate • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moPJkCbKjBs

  3. By the end of class: • Identify both parts of the phospholipid, explain which is hydrophobic and hydrophilic. • Identify parts to the cell membrane • Explain the purpose of each part. • Diagram the membrane.

  4. Cell Membrane Notes (in notebook) • Copy down only most important things from each slide. ON ODD PAGES INFO 3 drawings/diagrams 1 memory strategy 3 ? summary

  5. Cell Membrane Structure 1. The cell membrane is semi-permeable (lets some things in, keeps other things out).

  6. Cell Membrane Structure • 2. The membrane is made of a phospholipidbilayer.

  7. At the beginning of the year we talked about 4 types of macromolecules • What type of macromolecule is a phospholipid?

  8. What are the three other types of macromolecules we discussed earlier in the year?

  9. Cell Membrane Structure • 3. Protein molecules are woven throughout the membrane. • These can : • Protein CHANNELS move BIG/CHARGED materials in and out of the cell

  10. Cell Membrane Structure • 4. Carbohydrate chains connected to the outside make a fuzzy sugar-coating on animal cells. This is the cell’s Identification Tag!

  11. Cell identification enables cells to recognize each other. For example, immunity cells recognize foreign cells, and sperm cells recognize an ovum (egg) to fertilize.

  12. What about the last type of chemical…nucleic acid molecules? • Where do we find them in the cell?

  13. Closure Summarize the what you have learned about the cell membrane in 12 words or less. Be ready to share!

  14. By the end of class: • Identify both parts of the phospholipid, explain which is hydrophobic and hydrophilic. • Identify parts to the cell membrane • Explain the purpose of each part. • Diagram the membrane.
