Parent & Student Informational Meeting • Objectives • Review recommendation process • Review implications of those recommendations (impact on schedule) • Share information about Math 8H & Algebra Honors • Answer parent/student questions
Our Acceleration Philosophy • “Challenge without overwhelming” • Accelerated Student Contract • Shenendehowa provides accelerated programs not only to satisfy state mandates, but also to meet the needs of our diverse community of learners. • Being an accelerated student means more than having a strong work ethic. These courses are designed for students who not only have a strong academic aptitude, but students who are driven to learn. It is not only more difficult work, but classes that move at a quicker pace and require inherent student motivation. Accelerated students are eager to participate and consistently provide high quality work.
Recommendation Process • 1st & 2nd Quarter Math 7H Averages • Basic Skills & Conceptual Understanding • Work Habits • Quality of homework • Level of organization • Asking for help if/when needed
Recommendation Process (cont.) • Participation • Asking/Answering questions in class • Involvement in group work/activities • Level of interest in math • Classroom behavior • NYS Math Assessment Score • NYS Grade 5 Math Exam • NYS Grade 6 Math Exam has not yet been administered!
Scheduling • Most students will be recommended to continue with single acceleration. • This means they would be taking the Math 8H course as 7th graders.
Scheduling • Some students may be recommended to double accelerate. • This means they would be taking the Algebra Honors course as 7th graders.
When does a student take the Accelerated Math 8H class? • Within the regular school day • Most classes are mixed 7th & 8th graders • 7th grade students taking Math 8H will then automatically be enrolled in Algebra Honors as an 8th grader.
Math 8H Curriculum • Integers • Solving Equations • Angles • Polynomials • Percents • Transformational Geometry • Factoring Polynomials • Functions • Solving Inequalities • Slope • Constructions • Indirect Measurement
History of Accelerated Algebra Honors • Up until September 2007, one section of ninth grade math was taught separately in each building. • 2007 – 2008 approx. 90 students • 2008 – 2009 approx. 110 students • 2009 – 2010 116 students (currently includes 19 7th graders and 97 8th graders)
When does a student take the Accelerated Algebra Honors class? • Within the regular school day • Most classes are mixed 7th and 8th graders from all three middle schools • 7th grade students taking Algebra Honors will have a “Period 0” class when they are in 8th grade.
Algebra Honors Curriculum • The Language of Algebra • Real Numbers • Solving Linear Equations • Graphing Relations and Functions • Analyzing Linear Equations • Solving Linear Inequalities • Solving Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
Algebra Honors Curriculum (cont.) • Polynomials • Factoring • Quadratic and Exponential Functions • Radical Expressions and Triangles • Rational Expressions and Equations • Statistics • Probability
Algebra Honors • High school course • Regents Exam (June 2011) • HS transcript • Graphing calculator required • Pace of course • Summer work
Algebra Honors Summer Work • Course covers material in eighth grade curriculum as well as Integrated Algebra curriculum. • Seventh grade state test review (separately) in the spring. • Transformational Geometry packet for all students entering Algebra Honors.
