  3. Ecuador Ecuador has a developing economy that is highly dependent on commodities, namely petroleum and agricultural products. Ecuador is classified as a medium-income country. Ecuador is known for its rich ecology, hosting many endemic plants and animals, such as those of the Galápagos Islands. It is one of 15 megadiverse countries in the world.

  4. Intervention area • Estimated population: 65.000. • 2.500 persons with disability. • Negative population growth rate (-0.82%). The number of inhabitants of the area decreases by about 500 people per year. • The poverty rate is 83% (2010) and extreme poverty is 57% (2010).

  5. Objective To promote together with women and men with disabilities the improvement of their living conditions.

  6. Results • Women and men with disabilities develop their full potential, have access to services and opportunities in their community, and are active partners in it. • Persons with disabilities, their families, local governments, and services promote networks for combined efforts. • The community is sensitized to achieve proactive responses in the promotion and protection of rights of persons with disabilities.

  7. Some topicts • Focus in elderly people. • Strong emphasis on local policies. • Active respect for current legislation. • Replicability of the intervention.

  8. Sustainability The actively involvement of women and men with disabilities in all levels of project implementation. This has also involved the training of leaders with disabilities.

  9. Sustainability Strengthening local networks, with the participation of persons with disabilities, municipal authorities, and representatives of services (health, education, agricultural, and financial services).

  10. Sustainability Participatory development and joint monitoring of municipal affirmative ordinances (local laws). This ordinances provide universal accessibility, priority focus on persons with disabilities, reasonable adjustments in transportation, support on educational inclusion, and income generation through small businesses.

  11. Sustainability • Local government funding for project activities. Municipalities gradually assume the costs of implementing the project and incorporate MINKA in the municipal socio-economic policy.
