NIVA is Norway’s premier multidisciplinary research institute focusing on water bodies and quality. Established in 1958, we provide environmental monitoring, advisory services, and innovation, with expertise in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Our staff of 226 includes 122 research scientists, engaging in national and international projects. Funding from the Research Council supports specific research tasks aligned with NIVA's strategy. Our services range from marine ecology to aquaculture, oil and gas, waste water treatment, and more. We assure quality through accredited labs and offer methods development, interlaboratory comparisons, and passive samplers. Our ocean monitoring includes the innovative use of Ships of Opportunity (Ferrybox), enhancing our cooperation in marine and inland water management internationally.

Basic funding NIVA receives an annual basic funding from the Research Council of Norway. The basic funding, 12% of total turnover, is intended for: specific research tasks to ensure competence in line with NIVA strategy
