Configuration Management • What are the applicable standards? • For Nuclear Facilities - pretty well defined • For Conventional Facilities - LCAM - not specific • Which systems must be managed? • To what level? • What are recommended Best Mgt. Practices? • Is a graded approach acceptable? • Any 1st cost vs LCC trade-off analyses?

Authority over their life-span - poor records • Multiple engineering authorities • Science dept. eng’rg groups do own thing • PE policies not applicable to them • Config. Mgt. costs money (at least 1st cost) • constant pressure to reduce engineering costs • workload drives staff to next project (not as-built of past projects)

Configuration Management cont’d • Hazards/Costs of poor Configuration Mgt. • Life Safety Concerns • Increased risk of energized utility strikes • Unauthorized alterations - egress violations • Costs • Greater engineering effort required for new work • Costs for field changes/stoppages due to unknowns • Liability related

Configuration Management cont’d • BNL Past Practice - Conventional Facilities • PE Maintains CM for the following: • all floor plans ( for egress & space mgt) • fire protection (life safety) • underground utilities (operational & life safety) • electrical distribution (operational & life safety) • central plant systems (operational & life safety) • Scientific Facilities up to each Dept.
