  2. Purposes of an inaugural lecture • To try to explain to family and friends what it is that you actually do • To try to convince colleagues that what you do is actually useful • To try to encourage the next generation of researchers and teachers to improve on what you do

  3. What is translational neuroscience? My Definition: using information from one research domain to guide research in a different research domain I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated.

What is a stroke? • Interruption of the blood supply to part of the brain • Stops that bit of the brain from working • The consequences depend on which part of the brain is affected • In a warning stroke the blockage is temporary • If the blockage is permanent that part of the brain dies • When this happens, other bits of brain can sometimes learn to take over some of the functions which have been lost

  7. The burden of stroke • 5.5m people die worldwide each year – one every 6 seconds • ~150,000 per year in the UK • 40% of patients die • 30% become disabled as a result of their stroke
