  2. The Mende • African tribe of Sierra Leone (30%) • Mostly farmers and hunters. • Hundreds of thousands were stolen and brought to America (16th -18th Centuries).

  3. La Amistad • 19th Century schooner built in America. • Owned by a Spaniard who lived in Cuba. • Illegally transported slaves from Cuba to America. • Slaves overthrew the ship, but were tricked into sailing to America (1839) • Case goes to Supreme Court.

  4. “Who we are is who we were” – John Quincy Adams(La Amistad) John Quincy Adams The Sixth President of the USA (1825-1829) Son of John (2nd President) and Abigail Adams. Defended The Mende in front of the Supreme Court. Always argued that a president could abolish slavery under his powers during war time. “Who we are is who we were”
