The Development of the Seal
  • Four seals represented the University prior to its current seal
  • The first two were circular to resemble the seal of the state of Michigan

  • From 1941 to 1957 the University’s seals were rectangular and represented the buildings on campus

The Current Seal
  • The current seal was designed in 1957 by John Kemper after Western was declared a University
  • Mr. Kemper, an art professor, drew the seal on the back of his faculty card

Components of the Seal
  • The five stars stand for the five colleges(Applied Arts, Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies)
  • The tree and it’s roots stand for the college’s growth and firm planting
  • The stone arch and the missing keystone stand for the gateway to knowledge and the University’s continuing growth
  • The pyramid stands for the building of knowledge and the fire represents enlightenment
