  2. Presentation Overview • Network Hardware Types • Network Protocols • Network Adapters • MCS-Magnum Communication • MicroMag Communication • Example Network Configurations

  3. Network Hardware Types • Four network hardware types that are used in MCS products: • RS485 • RS232 • Ethernet • LonWorks (twisted pair)

  4. RS485 Hardware • One twisted pair (two conductors) • Shielded wire – wrapped foil with drain wire • Minimum AWG 20 • Max baud rate: 115,000 bit/s • Multidrop – point to point • Max 30 MCS Controllers wired together • Total Network cable length < 4000’ (1219m) • Can be lengthened with a repeater

  5. RS232 Hardware • One to one • Three conductor • 9 or 25 pin connecter • Max total cable length < 50’ (15m) • Can be lengthened with a repeater

  6. Ethernet Hardware • Star topography • 4 twisted pairs (8 conductors) • CAT5E • Max baud rate: 10 Mbit/s • Max cable length < 328’ (100m) • Can be lengthened with a switch

  7. LonWorks Hardware • One twisted pair (two conductors) • Shielded wire • Free topography • Minimum AWG 20 • Total Network cable length < 3280’ (1000m) • Can be lengthened with a repeater

  8. Network Protocols • Network protocols are formatting rules that specify how data is sent and received between devices. • Protocols are necessary for devices to interact with each other • Protocols MCS controllers support: • Bacnet • Modbus • LonTalk • Johnson N2 • MCS

  9. Network Protocols • The MCS Controllers support the following network protocols: Over Ethernet Over RS485 Over LonWorks

  10. MCS Network Adaptors • MCS uses five different optional network adapters: • Hardware Adapters • MCS-485-Gateway (RS232 - RS485) • MCS-Ethernet (Ethernet - RS232) • MCS-USB-RS232 (USB - RS232) • Hardware & Protocol Adapters • MCS-BMS-Gateway (Bacnet MSTP, LonTalk, Johnson N2) • MCS-Bacnet-Router2 (Bacnet IP)

  11. MCS-485-Gateway • Converts between • RS485 and RS232 • Used with the MicroMagfor a connection to: • PC (MCS-Connect) • MCS-Touch (MCS-Connect) • MCS-Ethernet • Can be powered from MCS Controller • Only hardware conversion, does not change protocol

  12. MCS-Ethernet • Converts between • Ethernet and RS232 • Used with the MicroMag for Ethernet connection to: • Internet • Comes with 120V wall outlet power adapter • Only hardware conversion, does not change protocol

  13. MCS-USB-RS232 • Converts between • USB and RS232 • Used for PC (MCS-Connect) communication • Powered through USB port • Only hardware conversion, does not change protocol

  14. MCS-BMS-Gateway • Converts Bacnet MSTP (RS485) to: • LonTalk (LonWorks) • Johnson N2 (RS485) • Converts Bacnet IP (Ethernet) to: • LonTalk (LonWorks) • Johnson N2 (RS485) • Bacnet MSTP (RS485) • Only supports one MCS-Magnum or MicroMag • Can be powered from MCS Controller • RS485 • Johnson N2 • Bacnet MSTP Or Ethernet Bacnet IP MCS-Magnum MCS-BMS-Gateway • LonWorks • LonTalk • RS485 • Johnson N2 RS485 Bacnet MSTP MicroMag MCS-BMS-Gateway Or • LonWorks • LonTalk

  15. MCS-Bacnet-Router2 • Converts Bacnet MSTP (RS485) to Bacnet IP (Ethernet) • Supports up to 30 MicroMag • Can be powered from MicroMag • Ethernet • Bacnet IP RS485 Bacnet MSTP MicroMag MCS-Bacnet-Router2

  16. MCS-Magnum Communication • The MCS-Magnum comes with two hardware communication ports: RS485 Port Ethernet Port

  17. MCS-Magnum Communication • The MCS Keypad has a built in MCS-485-Gateway and is connected to the RS485 port on the MCS-Magnum • These two ports cannot be in use at the same time with different protocols: • RS485 port on the MCS-Magnum • RS232 port on the MCS-Magnum Keypad RS232 Port RS485 Bus

  18. MCS-Magnum RS232 • The MCS-Magnum can be connected to a PC via MCS-Connect using RS232 located on the MCS-Magnum Keypad • The PC may require usb to RS232 adapter, MCS Part # (MCS-USB-RS232) • MCS-USB-RS232 MCS-PC9-MM cable PC (MCS-Connect) The RS485 cannot be used with different protocols when the RS232 is used

  19. MCS-Magnum RS485 • Using the RS485, the MCS-Magnum can be connected to the BMS (Modbus RTU or MCS 485) Building Management System . . . RS485 The RS232 cannot be used with different protocols when the RS485 is used

  20. Wiring MultipleMCS Controllers • Using the RS485, the network must be wired controller to controller • Star configurations not allowed • Up to 30 controllers can be wired together Correct Incorrect . . .

  21. MCS-Magnum Ethernet • Using the Ethernet, the MCS-Magnum can be connected to • BMS (Bacnet IP or Modbus IP) • MCS-Touch (MCS-Connect) • PC (MCS-Connect) • Internet access through router (which allows connection via MCS-Connect from anywhere) Or Or Or Ethernet

  22. MicroMag Communication • Ethernet access can be added with the MCS-Ethernet • The MicroMag comes standard with two independent ports: RS485 Port RS232 Port

  23. MicroMag RS232 • The MicroMag RS232 serial port only supports MCS protocol can be used to connect to: • MCS-Touch (MCS-Connect) • PC (MCS-Connect) • The PC may require usb to RS232 adapter, MCS Part # (MCS-USB-RS232) MCS-Touch MCS-PC9-MM cable • MCS-USB-RS232 PC (MCS-Connect) Or

  24. MicroMag RS485 • The MicroMag RS485 port can be used to connect: • MCS-Touch (MCS-Connect) • BMS (Bacnet MSTP or Modbus RTU or MCS 485) Building Management System . . . RS485 Or MCS-Touch

  25. MicroMag RS485 • The MicroMag RS485 port can be used to connect: • MCS-Touch (MCS-Connect) • BMS (Bacnet MSTP or Modbus RTU or MCS 485) • Internet Access using • MCS-485-GATEWAY and the MCS-Ethernet Ethernet . . . RS485 RS232 9pin  25pin Internet Router MCS-ETHERNET MCS-485-GATEWAY
