  1. Dr. AntarAbdellah Curriculum content organization

  2. Types of curriculum Organization • Structural curricula • situational curricula • topical curricula • Functional curricula • Skills-based curricula • Task-based curricula • Hybrid / mixed curricula

  3. Structural curricula • Grammatical and phonological structures are the organizing principles – sequenced from easy to difficult or frequent to less frequent. • Present grammar in patterns in model sentences • Pattern drilling: Ss are to compose new sentences following the pattern. • major patterns are broken into smaller units for grading: I, we, they, before he, she , it. • Easy to identify because table of contents is organized around grammar points: • Ch. I the present simple tense • Ch II. The passive • Ch III. Modals.

  4. Situational curricula • Based on the idea that language is found in situations. Topics are based on main situations esp. the ones the Ss are likely to encounter. • The sequencing moves from situation to situation based on the likelihood of encountering them. • Ch. I. at the post office • Ch II. At the airport • Ch III. At the net café.

  5. Topical Curricula • Organized by topics or themes selected by the author based on his sense of their importance to the Ss. • Sequenced based on their perceived importance or the relative difficulty of the reading passages. • Ch I. Changing life style • Ch. II. Stress • CH. III aggressive behavior

  6. Functional curricula • Revolves around the functions of language rather than the structure; • For one function, there can be more than one form; apology, agreement, suggestion… • Sequenced based on a hierarchy of useful functions • Ch I. introducing oneself • Ch II. Requesting • Ch III. Offering help

  7. Skill-based Curricula • Based on the skills required for the Ss according to the authors’ perception of their usefulness • Unit I. Scanning • Unit II. Key words • Unit III. Connectors

  8. Task-based Curricula • Organized around some tasks that the Ss are required to perform in the language. • Selection is based on the authors’ perception of the usefulness of these tasks to the Ss language development. • Unit I. Writing personal letters • Unit II. Writing descriptions • Unit III. Reporting experiences.

  9. Mixed curricula • Mixes two or more types of curriculum design • Sometimes called ‘layered curricula’ • Unit One: A place of your own • lesson one: leaving home • lesson 2: hotel reservation • lesson three: types of homes • lesson 4: rejoining people

  10. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each curriculum design?
