  1. Current Electricity Electricity in Motion

  2. Electric Current • Current  the rate at which charges move • I = DQ/Dt • I  electric current (Amperes) • DQ  charge passing through a given area (Coulombs) • Dt  time interval (seconds) • Conventional Current  defined as the motion of positive charges or charge carriers

  3. Electric Current • Sources  anything that can supply a potential difference in a circuit • Batteries  convert chemical energy into electrical potential energy • Generators  convert mechanical energy into electrical potential energy • Hydroelectric • Wind Turbine • Oil/Coal/Gas Fired • Nuclear

  4. Electric Current • Two Types  AC & DC • DC  direct current charges move in only one direction • AC  alternating current  the motion of the charges continuously changes directions  In the US the AC oscillates 60 times per second or a frequency of 60 Hz

  5. Resistance • The opposition to the motion of charges through a conductor • Varies for different materials • Ohm’s Law  resistance = potential difference current Unit W • R = DV I • DV = IR • I = DV R

  6. Electric Power • The rate at which electrical energy is converted • Electric Power = Current x Potential Difference • P = IDV • P = I(IR) = I2R • P = DV2 R
