  2. Many nursing home residents fall victim to abuse by caretakers and other staff members. The following are some of the different types of nursing home abuse:

Physical Abuse • Infliction of physical harm on a nursing home resident such as slapping, punching, kicking, and use of excessive restraint. • The withholding of prescribed medications or the administration of prohibited medications. • Common physical abuse signs: • Broken bones • Bruises • Unexplained cuts • Marks from ropes

Emotional Abuse • The deliberate causing of anxiety, anguish, fear or other undesirable mental states • Any verbal communication that intentionally causes an elder unreasonable emotional stress • Common emotional abuse signs: • Being non-communicative or non-responsive • Being unreasonably upset or agitated • Showing unusual behavior or withdrawing

Financial Abuse • This happens when the assets or the property of an elder are illegally or improperly used. • This isnclude forging an elderly person’s signature, taking cash, signing the elder’s checks, coercing him or her to sign a document, etc. • Unexpected withdrawals of account funds • Unexpected charges to credit cards • A large amount of unpaid bills

  6. Sexual Abuse • Having non-consensual sex • Unwanted touching, sexual assault, coerced nudity, sodomy, etc. are all forms of sexual abuse. • Common sexual abuse signs: • Unexplained genital infections • Bruises on the breasts or genitals • Bleeding from the anus or vagina
