  2. Meet William Shakespeare! • Many people consider him to be greatest dramatist ever • Wrote 37 plays and more than 150 sonnets • Personalities of main characters are complex, revealing the ambiguities found in us all

Personal Life • Born April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden • Father, John, was a glove maker and local political figure • Mother, Mary, came from a family of wealthy land owners • Studied literature and Latin at local grammar school • Did not receive formal education at a university

  4. Finding Love • In 1582 , Shakespeare (18) married Anne Hathaway (26). • Had 3 children, Susanna, Hamnet, and Judith • Worked as a school teacher

  5. Career • In 1580s moved to London and became prominent in theater • Acted and wrote many plays • Wrote in language of ordinary people – everyone could relate • Earned recognition as one of greatest playwrights in England
