  5. Bgklg2fz World AIDS Day December 1 Themes for World AIDS Day The Red Ribbon

  6. Bgklg3qz1 According to UN AIDS (联合国艾滋病规划署)estimates there were 38.6 million adults and 3.2 million children living with HIV at the end of 2002, and during the year 5 million new people became infected with the virus.Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25, 35.95% of the total number of people with HIV live in the developing world. But HIV still remains a threat to the people of all ages and nationalities. Stigma and Discrimination is the theme of the 2003 World AIDS day. In many parts of the world, discrimination prevents people who are known to have HIV from securing a job or caring for their families. Discrimination can cause isolation and marginalize (排斥)people who have HIV and AIDS. This can prevent people from being offered or seeking the treatment which could save their lives.

  7. Bgklg2qz2 In order for HIV to be effectively tackled on an international level, efforts need to be made to end the discrimination against people with HIV and AIDS. Educate people in safer sex and drug use, using appropriate media. Provide condoms freely to people in the developing world. Provide financial and medical assistance so that people with HIV and AIDS can be treated. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about raising awareness, education and fighting prejudice. World AIDS Day is also important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

  8. Bgklg2qz3 The theme for World AIDS Day 2003 is Stigma and Discrimination. Each year there is a particular theme chosen for World AIDS Day, and for the last sixteen years the themes have been as follows: 2006 Stop AIDS,Keep the Promise2005 Stop AIDS,Keep the Promise2004 Women and AIDS2003 Stigma and Discrimination2002 Stigma and Discrimination2001 I care. Do you?2000 AIDS:Men make a difference1999 Listen, Learn, Live:World AIDS Campaign with Children and Young People1998 Force For Change:World AIDS Campaign With Young People

  10. Bgklg2qz43 The Red Ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn by people all year round and particularly around world AIDS day to demonstrate care and concern about HIV and AIDS, and to remind others of the need for their support and commitment. The red ribbon started as a “grass roots” effort, and as a result there is no official red ribbon, and many people make their own. To make your own ribbons, get some ordinary red ribbon, about 1.5 cm wide and cut it into strips about 15 cm long. Then fold at the top into an inverted “V” shape and put a safety pin through the centre which you use to attach the ribbon to your clothing. 40. Pre-reading 1. What do you know about AIDS? 2. Do you know how to prevent yourself from being infected with AIDS? 3. What effective measures do you think we should take to prevent AIDS?

  41. 译文 z.w 1 Filling the Prevention Gap We have come a long waysince December 1 was declared “World AIDS Day” in 1988. Back then, AIDS was a relatively new, commonly misunderstooddisease that left an estimated 5 to 10 million with the disease with little hope of long-term survival.

  42. 译文 z.w 2 Today, despite major advances in testing, treatment, and mother-childtransmission,HIV/AIDS is still outpacing us. We know how to prevent it, and yet last year an estimated 4.3 million people became newly infected with HIV—the vast majority in developing countries. Only a fractionwill be treated.

  43. 译文 z.w 3 Fewer than 15 percent of young women in Southeast Asia—home to one of the highest rates of new infections—know how to protect themselves from infection. Worldwide, fewer than one in eight people at high riskcan find a nearby clinic offering HIV testing and counseling. Fewer than one in ten people at high risk have access tocondoms. And in Africa, where the majority ofpeople living with HIV/AIDS are women, fewer than one in ten have access to treatments to keep their newborns from inheriting the virus.

  44. 译文 z.w 4 World AIDS Day is a call to action. Today in Nepal, Mercy Corps is supporting an event hosted by Nava Kiran Plus—a group led by HIV—positiveactivists—to bring their prevention message to young people at risk. Here at home, you can get the word outin your community about what is at stakein the fight against AIDS, and join international efforts such as The One Campaignto lobby governments to spend more on access to prevention. It is estimated that universal access to effective prevention would avert 28 million new HIV cases in the next ten years, saving immeasurable suffering, loss of life and an estimated $24 billion in treatment expense, human and financial costs we simply can not afford.

  45. 译文 z.w 5 A quarter-century into the battle against HIV/AIDS, there is a lot to be proud of. But success in the next quarter-centurywill not be judged only by the number of new drugs or prevention technologies, but also by the number of people with access to the basic tools of disease prevention. Because in the endthere is only number that really matters: the number of lives saved.
