  2. Realization # 1 Parents meeting in Kumon is no different in schools. Parents expect it to be personal. “They want to know more about their child.”

  3. Realization # 1 As much as possible know more about their child before PO. Review the child’s progress before a meeting. “What is the connection of your topic to their child?”

  4. Realization # 2 Parents expect a concrete response with a basis. “How is my child?” What is OK lang?

  5. Realization # 3 Flaunt the good, reword the not so good. Parents are ready to hear the truth. But they are not ready with our frankness Unless you are ready to pick a fight 

  6. Realization # 3 Parents respect us, therefore, we should also show respect for their child’s abilities and behavior.

  7. Realization # 4 If I know we met on the same page, you win me. You have my trust and my support, Teacher. And I am ready to take any role you give me.

  8. Realization # 5 Parents want to be of help. But not all of them know how. We must be very clear.

  9. How to Supervise Children at Home • Set 5:00 pm as a regular study time. • Ensure that TV is turned off. (conducive for study) • He should be within your sight. • Look at him every two minutes. • Do not stand too close to him. He would get conscious. • After one subject, look at his work. • Commend his effort(working fast, independently) • Review his answers. (but please do not correct)

  10. Realization # 6 Parents easily admire eloquent teachers. “Who is she Mommy?” The admiration disappears and they feel cheated in a way.

  11. Realization # 7 Not all stay home parents are hands-on and not all working parents are hands-off. Level of parental involvement will determine the flow of the Parents Meeting.

  12. Realization # 7 What time and where does the child study? Has he memorized the multiplication table already? What table was difficult for him?

  13. Hands-on Parents • Concrete observation to build rapport and credibility • Focus on plans immediately. • I stop and ask if there is question when I sense a frown

Hands-off Parents • Why study goals are important. • Concrete observations. • I solicit questions from time to time even if there is no reaction on their end. • I supply possible questions and answer them myself. • I ask for their goal. • I give out their roles based on their goals. • I ask if they are comfortable with it. • If no, I reemphasize the its importance.

  16. I don’t want parents to miss the joy of seeing their child develop. For me, I found the greatest joy when my child was able to recognize all the letters of the alphabet. All the hard work vanished. As an educator, I am privileged to see child develop more often. But I haven’t fully understood joy in learning, until I saw it in my daughter.

  17. Realization # 8 Hands-on parents can be intimidating at first, but they are black or white when it comes to their child’s progress. I win or I lose them. I value their trust.

  18. Realization # 9 Their child’s happiness and enjoyment means a lot to the parents . It is my challenge to introduce concept of long term happiness and enjoyment. What is real happiness and real enjoyment?

  19. Realization # 10 Parents want to know more about their child. It is just a question of when.

  20. Realization # 10 I schedule based on their preference. (respect begets respect) I send letters. (at least three weeks ahead) Talk to child prior to the meeting. (to prepare myself and for the child to help me remind the parent)

  21. Communicating is the first thing a person learns, but it takes his lifetime to fully know how to do it correctly.
