  4. Context – What is Veterinary Science? Brittanica …anatomy, physiology and pathology of animals other than man. It includes the diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of their diseases… intercommunicable diseases…use of their flesh and other products…scientific breeding, feeding and handling…

What then is veterinary science? • It is a profession which exists globally • Plays a critical role in many fields pertaining to the health and welfare of animals • companion animals – dogs, cats, horses • farm/production animals • wildlife and exotic species • Plays a significant role in the health and welfare of humans – food safety and security, companionship, zoonoses

Undergraduate Veterinarians - BVSc Veterinary nurses - DipVetNurs Postgraduate Honours Masters PhD Doctorate (DVSc) Degree and Diploma programmes recognised by SAVC allowing practice in SA BVSc degree recognised in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia for automatic registration Academic programmes

  9. Veeartsenykunde – akademiese program • A 6-year core-elective programme which commenced in 2011 • Core component 4 and a half years • Elective component one semester • Experiential component one year • Old programme sequentially phased out from 2011

Admission requirements • National Senior Certificate with: • Two languages of which one must be English, both at least at level 4 (50-59%) • Mathematics, at least at level 4 provided Physical Science is at level 5 or higher • Physical Science, at least at level 4 provided Mathematics is at level 5 or higher • 2 other subjects, at least at level 4 (50-59%) • National Benchmark Test • APS of at least 30 (Life Orientation excluded)

  12. Admission categories – first year • Admission to all categories by selection • School leavers • Students with previous tertiary exposure • International students • Sector-specific students

  13. Toelating tot die tweede studiejaar • All students who passed first year • Students selected into vacancies • Limited number of graduate students with appropriate subject combinations

Selection • School leavers provisionally selected on Grade 11 results – Grade 12 APS should not be >3 points lower than Grade 11 APS but still above the minimum of 30 • Students with tertiary experience to be selected on first semester results or full year results • Other criteria such as psychometric profiles, value-added criteria and interviews also being considered for future implementation

Akademiese program • Basic subjects in first year: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, General and Medical Nursing and others • Applied subjects in first semester of second year: Anaesthesiology, Nursing, Radiography, Theatre practice • Practical and clinical application in second semester of second year (no lectures)
