How Is IoT Becoming The Pulse Of Healthcare?

A Gartner survey of 511 U.S.-based enterprise IT managers, released in January, revealed that IoT adoption is becoming mainstream. Eleven percent of those surveyed worked in healthcare enterprises, and 86% of those respondents reported having an IoT architecture in place for most lines of business.

  2. Various technologies also drive healthcare sectors. In fact, in the times of COVID, technology has emerged as the biggest boon. Most of us are relying on technology, whether we talk about healthcare professionals or common people. IoT or Internet Of Things is all about connected devices that transmit information, and thereby the machines act. It has remarkably increased in the last few years due to the use of IoT in the healthcare sector. As per the survey of Gartner, which was done on 511, US-based companies believe that IoT has become a part of our life. It is becoming a leading technology. 2

  3. IoT plays a key role in ensuring automation and a seamless flow of information so that the machine can perform flawlessly. Companies with revenue of more than $100 million revealed that 79% of the healthcare providers are using IoT in their production process. Moreover, many healthcare devices work on IoT. So, we cannot undermine the importance of the same. As per the research of Aruba Network, around 89% of the healthcare organization would have adopted IoT. The period between 2017 and 2020 is being called the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). Thus it's going to be an era of transformation. 3

  4. Here are certain examples of how IoT is going to become the pulse of healthcare: 1. Remote health monitoring and telehealth- One of the first areas of IoT in healthcare is in remote healthcare and telehealth. There is a general shift in the way health care facilities are now administered to the patients. The rise in the demand for remote health and telehealth. It is expected that the global smart healthcare market will reach up to $169.30 billion by the end of 2020, and in this remote monitoring will play a key role. 4

  5. In the times to come, we are going to see a rise in the number of healthcare wearables and biosensors along with other medical devices, which will keep a tab on your health status. Smartwatches equipped with medical health monitoring has become very common. To leverage all this technology, there is going to be a demand for IoT developers, or companies can also opt for IoT training of their employees, thus making them equipped with all the information about the use of technology. AI, Big Data, ML, Deep Learning, all these are going to play a defining role in the field of technology. 5

  6. 2. Connected inhalers- There is a great section of the society who are suffering from breathing problems. And many of us are using inhalers. But now is the era of connected inhalers. A company named Propeller Health has manufactured this smart inhaler. In this, the sensor is attached to the inhaler or Bluetooth spirometer. This then gets connected with the app, which helps the people suffering from breathing issues. This understands what might be causing breathlessness and also provides an allergen forecast. 6

  7. 3. Ingestible sensors- Would you believe in the fact that there are ingestible inhalers. Proteus Digital Health has made ingestible sensors. These are designed in the form of pills that get dissolved in the stomach and produce a small signal which is picked up by the sensors that are there on the body. It will help in detecting whether the patient is taking medicine as prescribed or not. Did you know that as per the data of WHO, around 50% of the people don't take medicine as directed? With the help of ingested devices, this problem can be easily overcome. 7

  8. 4. Apple Watch that monitors depression- Yes, your hi-tech apple watch can now detect depression. The latter is the most common problem faced by people, and many of us don't even get to know about it. But with this wearable healthcare device, depression can be easily detected. 5. Coagulation testing – Yes, this is yet another advancement that IoT has made in recent years. In 2016, Roche launched a Bluetooth enabled system that can detect the blood clots in the patients. This is one of a kind device that has come in the market, and there are many others paving their way. 8

  9. These were a few of the many uses of IoT in the field of healthcare. IoT developers are working around the clock to create such devices, which can help improve healthcare working and administration. IoT training has become a must for most of the organizations. If you, too, are willing to become an IoT developer, then IoT training and IoT certifications are a must. There are a number of institutes providing such training programs, and all you need is the right learning platform. Global Tech Council provides an online IoT certification program. 9

  10. Conclusion In the times to come, we are going to see widespread use of IoT in healthcare, and with IoT certifications, you can also have a prosperous career. 10
