  2. Things you need to know about fractions... Finding Fractions of Amounts Equivalent Fractions and cancelling down Top Heavy Fractions and Mixed Numbers These are REALLY important Adding and Subtracting Fractions Multiplying Fractions Dividing Fractions Fractions and Decimals Fractions and Percentages Ordering Fractions Click this to get back here Things you should know

  3. Finding Fractions of Amounts 3 5 If you are asked for of an amount 1 5 3 5 Find by dividing by 5 and then find by multiplying by 3. 3 5 To find of 60: 60 ÷ 5 = 12 12 x 3 = 36 3 5 of 60 is 36

  4. Finding Fractions of Amounts 2 7 If you are asked for of an amount 1 7 2 7 Find by dividing by 7 and then find by multiplying by 2. 2 7 To find of 35: 35 ÷ 7 = 5 5 x 2 = 10 2 7 of 35 is 10

  5. Finding Fractions of Amounts 5 9 If you are asked for of an amount 1 9 5 9 Find by dividing by 9 and then find by multiplying by 5. 5 9 To find of 63: 63 ÷ 9 = 7 5 x 7 = 35 5 9 of 63 is 35

  6. Finding Fractions of Amounts A quick way to remember what to do is: “Divide by the bottom, times by the top”

  18. Multiplying Fractions To multiply simply times the numbers at the top, then times the numbers at the bottom, you may have to simplify 3 4 5 8 15 32 x = 2 7 5 6 10 42 5 21 x = = 3 5 7 9 21 45 7 15 x = =

  19. Simplify before multiplying 1 6 7 5 6 1x5 7x1 5 7 x = This will help with division too, do it after the keep, change flip bit = 1 1 4 5 3 8 1x3 5x2 3 10 x = = 2 2 4 9 6 7 4x2 3x7 8 21 x = = 3

  20. Dividing Fractions • To divide remember KEEP, CHANGE, FLIP • KEEP the first fraction • CHANGE the multiply sign to divide • FLIP the second fraction 4 7 3 4 4 7 4 3 16 21 ÷ x = = 1 2 7 8 4 7 1 2 8 7 8 14 ÷ x = = = 3 4 5 8 3 4 8 5 24 20 1 5 ÷ x = =1 4 20 1 = or

  21. Equivalent Fractions

  22. 2/4, ½ and 3/6 look different but these fractions are all the same, they are EQUIVALENT They all eat 6 sweets Three friends each have 12 sweets Abbie puts hers into 4 piles and eats 2 of them Libby puts hers into 2 piles and eats 1 of them Chrissy puts hers into 6 piles and eats 3 of them Chrissy has had 3/6 Abbie has had 2/4 Libby has had 1/2

  23. Are these fractions EQUIVALENT? 8 Simplify the fractions 1 ÷8 24 3 Look for the biggest number that goes into the top and bottom of the fractions Divide by the number 12 1 ÷12 These fractions are equivalent 36 3

  24. Are these fractions EQUIVALENT? 8 Simplify the fractions 4 ÷2 10 5 Look for the biggest number that goes into the top and bottom of the fractions 12 Divide by the number 3 ÷4 These fractions are NOT equivalent 16 4

  25. Are these fractions EQUIVALENT? 9 Simplify the fractions 3 ÷3 Look for the biggest number that goes into the top and bottom of the fractions 12 4 Divide by the number 21 3 ÷7 These fractions are equivalent 28 4

  26. What number goes here? 15 3 ÷5 20 4 32 4 ÷8 40 5

  27. What number goes here? 2 8 X8 3 24 1 9 X9 5 45

  39. Cancelling fractions down It is often best to have the numbers possible when we write fractions 12 20 3 5 Instead of we would have We have cancelled the fractions down, by dividing top and bottom numbers by the same number (in this case 4)

  40. 15 35 3 7 = Divide by 5 24 36 2 3 = Divide by 12 55 66 5 6 = Divide by 11

  41. Cancelling fractions down If we pick the biggest number possible to divide by we only have to cancel down once. We must always check that there are no more numbers which go into the top and bottom number When there are no more numbers which go into the top and bottom of the fraction, the fraction is FULLY SIMPLIFIED or CANCELLED DOWN FULLY
