  1. The History of Porcelain Veneers For years dentists have been focused on repairing teeth, preventing disease and helping your smile to look as good as possible. However, techniques to achieve this were fairly limited before the late 1960’s. Since then cosmetic dentistry has come a long way; there are procedures for virtually everything! The Origins of Adhesive Dentistry Porcelain veneers rely on a strong bonding agent to ensure they can stay in place; even when biting into a rack of ribs or a juicy apple. However, good quality adhesive is a relatively recent development in the world of dentistry. In fact, it was nearly the end of the 1960’s before Dr. Michael Bunocore dramatically improved adhesive technology. Put simply, he etched your teeth with a mild acid; this allowed the adhesive to stick better to your tooth. The results were impressive; people could suddenly wear veneers and even dentures without worrying about them coming off as they chewed. Modern Porcelain Veneers The early porcelain veneers were strong, but the more recent versions have used modern technology to improve the strength of the porcelain veneers and extend the life of them to between 10 and 30 years. This is not to say that they cannot be damaged or that receding gums will not cause a separate issue. But, well looked after veneers can nearly last a lifetime!

  2. Interesting Fact: Prior to porcelain, gold, wood or even human bones were used to create veneers for your teeth! The porcelain veneers used by dentists today are made of several layers of porcelain, which are bonded to improve strength. This is an intricate process as each veneer is just ½ millimeter thick! Should You Have Porcelain Veneers Fitted? There is no doubt that porcelain veneers are an expensive option; the average price is approximately $1,000 per tooth. However, they can make a huge difference to your life. The main factor to consider when deciding if a porcelain veneer is for you is how it will make you feel. If you have discolored, damaged or crooked teeth you may find that you have a lack of confidence in unfamiliar situations or when meeting new people. This is normal as you will be aware that your smile is not perfect; and the world seems to be placing more of an emphasis on smiles than it has ever done before. If this describes how you feel then porcelain veneers can give you the smile you need and deserve; lifting your confidence as well as improving your looks and oral health. It is worth noting, before you commit to any procedure, that veneers are permanent. Enamel is removed from your teeth to allow them to be fitted; if you crack or break one it will need to be replaced; and all your veneers will need to be replaced in the future. Of course, there are many benefits to having porcelain veneers fitted; not just improved confidence. Your teeth will be healthier and you will be more dedicated to looking after them. It can even encourage you to eat better! The final decision is yours, but very few people regret having porcelain veneers fitted.
