  1. Tote Bags Then and Now Tote bags get their name from the term “tate” which literally means to carry. This terminology can be traced back in time to somewhere in the seventeenth century, but, we do not find people applying the term to a bag they carried until the nineteen hundreds. The start of the tote bag infatuation in the United States occurred in the 1940s. L.L. Bean introduced a large bag they dubbed the L. L. Bean Boat Bag. The boat bag was large and had a convenient handle on top. It was easier to carry than the luggage of the day so many people opted to carry the boat bag when they went on short overnight excursions.
