  1. Engagement Photography Engagement photography is the portion of wedding photography that best allows the personality of the couple to shine. Weddings lead the photography industry for business value. The average American wedding alotts 10% of the budget to the photographer. Engagement photos are not always included in a basic package, and these photos are truly a newer phenomena. Weddings were quickly one of the most popular places for picture taking when cameras were invented in the late 1800s, but this time candid photos were impossible because of the low grade technology. The advances in technology have lead to a progression of photography styles. ●Traditional methods of wedding photography mimic the old days where the poses were very rigid, however many people still appreciate the value in this. ●Photojournalism techniques mimic a reporter following an event. The photographer hopes to help the couple act as if they aren’t there to take pictures at all to catch them being themselves. ●Fashion-based approaches combine traditional and photojournalism to highlight the natural tendencies of a couple. The photographer might interrupt a moment to make small changes and dramatize the moment. ●Studio photography is a progression of traditional where all aspects of the shoot are dealt with in the studio. The couple is assisted with hair, makeup, and wardrobe, before taking posed photos onsite. ●The general goal of contemporary photography is to take advantage of all the advances in technology and techniques to give their images the feel of actually being present in the moment, rather than just a flat image to look at. Engagement photography gives couples the opportunity to express who they are. A wedding day may only take place at the ceremony and the location of the reception, which limits the setting for photos. Further, the bride and groom are preoccupied and often stressed on their wedding day. These photo sessions allow the couple to put themselves in whatever setting they feel most comfortable, and in turn, creates the highest likelihood of high quality pictures where the couple is simply acting naturally and are able to focus on each other instead of their guests. Engagement photography has lead to the development of several new standard poses. These are not unnatural, but rather common, loving gestures that a couple will often do. The goal of the photographer is to help the couple be best represented visually and personality wise in the end result. ●The kiss - obviously a mainstay of these photos, the photographer will pay close attention to hand placement and the contours of the couples’ bodies. ●Touching foreheads - a very intimate position in itself, but can be accentuated by the male carrying his future wife or by their eye contact.

  2. ●Hug from behind - quickly becoming one of the most common poses in this field, the photographer can do things like help highlight the couples’ engagement rings. Engagement photography is supposed to be light and fun. It’s important to remember that these do not have to be constants and that even though some are common, a good photographer will help the couple put their special touch on something done before.
