  1. Electric Scooters Scooters have really come a long way from the days of my childhood, the old-fashioned scooter that didn’t use electric /battery powered assistance. The only “power” they had was the riders “foot power”. Now there are so many different styles of electric scooters. Some scooters don’t even look like scooter at all; they are ride on vehicles, bicycles, and motorcycles. Electric scooters are not just for fun anymore; there are also scooters that are made to add mobility to a disabled or elderly person’s life who before they had their scooter were confined to a wheelchair and had no independence. Now with their new mobility scooter, an elderly or disabled person is no longer dependent on someone else to come over and push their wheelchair for them, they can get into their mobility scooter and ride it to the corner store for groceries, or just go for a ride around the neighbourhood and enjoy the day. Gone is their lack of independence, thanks to mobility scooters. Even the 9-5’ers are parking their gas-powered vehicles and purchasing an electric scooter to get around town; electric scooters are very economical and require very little maintenance. On a fully charged battery a person can travel several miles before needing another charge. Just pack along the battery charger in a backpack or other carry-on luggage type bag, and when you get to the office, plug it in to ensure you have enough juice to go to lunch, at lunch time you can ride your scooter to your favourite lunchtime hangout and back to the office in less time than it took to get in your car, drive to the restaurant, wait for long stopping lights to change signals, then search for a parking spot, all this took up valuable lunch break time. With your scooter you just hop on the scooter and ride straight to your destination—you can take you scooter indoors (in most cases) if not, lock it up at the bicycle rack out front; no hassles at all. Legality of riding an electric scooter Some states do not allow riding an electric scooter on the street; because they are no able to be tagged, titled, and insured, and scooters do not meet federal guidelines for lights and mirrors. However, in the State of California, a person 16 or over can ride their scooter on the street as long as they have a state issued driver’s license, are wearing a helmet, have no passengers, and follow the same rules of the road as the other motorized vehicles do. The scooter has to have working brakes, handlebars not raised above the rider’s shoulders. The scooter must also have a headlight and reflectors if you plan on riding at night. As well, scooter cannot be ridden on the sidewalk, if the posted speed limit of a street is over 25 mph the scooter must be ridden in the Class II bicycle lane. If you are able to meet the requirements of being street legal (check your local state codes) and you are tired of fighting the traffic and long lines at the gas pump, then maybe you are ready to join the many others who have opted for an electric scooter as their primary mode of transit.
