  25. BEFORE THE 1950’s

  26. Young people were expected to go and work so they could provide for their families . Near the 1950’s only about half of the US population had their high school diploma. Work full time jobs. Little leisure time. No extra money. IT ALL CHANGED WHEN THE 1950’s CAME…

  27. VIDEO OF HOW WAS LIFE DURING THE 1950’s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wAa3V1EVQI&feature=related WATCH UNTIL SECOND 0:36 THEN… STOP

  28. DURING THE 1950’s EDUCATION BEING PROMOTED CHILDHOOD INDEPENDENCE …

  29. To Europeans still locked in the great post war years, America appeared as a land of plenty. Undamaged by the war , more prosperous than ever • The average Americans income was twice as high as the British workers and four times as high as the Italians • Parents wanted to give their children (the youth) what they could not have. • “It was golden, I got everything I wanted.” • Things such as cars, defined what your status was, it defined where you came from and where you could go. • It was an era when Americans had fun.

  30. YOUTH

  31. Jeans, motorcycles, rebellious

  32. IT ALL CHANGED in the 1950’s. After the Great Depression was over, there was no more need for the young to drop out of high school to go to work, so education started being promoted more and more. • This meant that “ Childhood Dependence” increased and now the 15, 16, 17, and 18 year olds had free time in their hands. • With all this free time for themselves, different activities started to surround the “ teenagers”. • Companies began marketing for this new group of consumers. Clothing, music, and art was promoted. • This is what they (adults) called the “ Youth Culture” • Movies also had a great impact showing what was the youth in America in the 1950’s, films such as “Rebel Without A Cause” showed how was the culture now, blue jeans, motorcycles, rock & roll and rebelliousness .

  33. Rise of Youth Power: During the 1950’s young Americans (youth) had a big influence on culture. Movies, music, magazines, art and theater all reflected the major interests of the young generation. Teens concerns were different form those of their parents. Teens were eager consumers having $7 billion to spend annually on whatever they wanted. They did not have to pay house bills , so they had money to spend on what they liked. The average teenager would have about $10.55 as their weekly income. INTERESTING FACT: That weekly income teenagers had weekly, was a weekly income for an entire family during war time. Teenagers having money their parents gave them, meant more freedom and independence.

  34. QUIZ: • 1. TRUE OR FALSE: Before the 1950’s the young generation had leisure time and extra money to spend on whatever they wished. • 2. Was education promoted during the 1950’s? Why? • 3. What would you say is the major difference between the post 1950’s young generation to the 1950’s generation.
