  2. Synopsis • What is Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation • Why Use Physiotherapy? • Physiotherapy…Putting an End to Pain and Suffering • The Wonders of Physiotherapy and Physical Rehabilitation • Physiotherapy and How It is the Best way to Rehabilitation

  3. What is Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation • Physiotherapy is the occupation in which professional physiotherapists work to improve a patient’s quality of life by developing, maintaining, and restoring their movement and functional abilities. • Types of Physiotherapies • Musculoskeletal and orthopedic physiotherapy, which consists of sprains, back pains, arthritis, strains, bursitis, incontinence, posture, sports and workplace injuries, as well as any conditions from reduced mobility. • Neurological disorders resulting from strokes, spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. Physiotherapy may also be helpful following any type of brain surgery, as well. • Cardiothoracic which is also known as a name that has been assigned to asthma, bronchial conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.

  4. Why Use Physiotherapy? • There a few simple reasons, one because it works and the other is because the results are can be remarkable for most patients. The earlier a person begins physiotherapy the sooner they will start to recover and feel better. The ultimate goal of physiotherapy is to relieve pain and correct the injured area as quickly as possible. Qualified therapists use techniques such as exercise, manual therapy, electrical therapy, and medical acupuncture; these are just some examples of the types of physiotherapy treatment options available. Therapists also study the imbalance of muscle and postural behaviors to help them in developing a treatment plan that is best for the recovery process of the individual.

  5. Physiotherapy…Putting an End to Pain and Suffering • How can Physiotherapy Help? • Many people confuse physiotherapy with chiropractic and massage therapy. However, it is like neither of those “alternative treatments” for pain. Physiotherapist’s address autonomic disorders that affect or nervous system. Asthma and sleep apnea patients can be treated by cardiovascular physiotherapists. A physiotherapist will use exercises as simple as having the patient blow up a balloon, to increase breathing control. Physiotherapy can also help strengthen the pelvic floor with certain exercises. Physiotherapy can also fight obesity by providing education about the effects being overweight has on the musculoskeletal system and setting up personalized exercise plans that won’t be taxing on the patient's joints.

  6. Cont… • What is the Reason for Physiotherapy Exercises? • The exercises that physiotherapists use are meant to strengthen the patient’s muscles and get their muscles back to the way they were before the injury or debilitating disease weakened them. The physiotherapist’s goal is to return their patient’s muscle tone back to its optimum performance standard. • How can a Patient Prepare for the Therapy Session? • The therapy sessions are designed to aid the patient in the rehabilitation process, whether the physiotherapy is needed for a “one-time” injury or for the therapy of a chronic and ongoing disease. Some tips to take into account when preparing for your therapy session are as follows: • Make sure to wear comfortable clothing so that your clothing won’t be an impediment to the physiotherapist’s attempts to evaluate your joint stability and movements. • Ensure to council with your physiotherapist about the level of pain you are at and what you would like to achieve during your rehab sessions. • Be sure you are honest with your physiotherapists as to the nature of your pain, how long it has existed, and how long you have had this problem.

  7. The Wonders of Physiotherapy and Physical Rehabilitation • Swedish Massage Technique • involves a combination of techniques such as circular pressure that is being applied by the hands and palms of the massage therapist, as well as involving a firm kneading, with percussion-like tapping, in a bending and stretching motion. • Lymphatic Massage • this is also known as a “lymphatic drainage/manual lymph drainage technique which was first developed in Germany. It was originally intended for the treatment of “lymphedema” which is the accumulation of fluids which collect in the lymph nodes after surgery, (most often after a mastectomy). • Deep Tissue Massage • involves a much deeper pressure technique which is used for releasing tension in the muscles which is caused by chronic pain and tension.

  8. Physiotherapy and How It is the Best way to Rehabilitation • Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) • A study done by Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, has proven that by treating their staff at NHS who suffers from MSDs (Musculoskeletal disorders) at an early stage with physiotherapy, resulted in these employees being able to either remain working (53.3 per cent), or return to work much more quickly within eight days, (21.7 per cent) and the remainder of employees were able to return to work after 30 days; than if they used another form of rehabilitation. • Falls • When a person is at risk for recurrent falls they are considered for being in need of “multifactorial rehabilitation” which is a form of rehabilitation that assists with their sense of balance and strength.

  9. Cont… • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) • Another study was done on patients requiring rehabilitation due to being chronically disabled by COPD, showed that physiotherapy done on an outpatient basis, actually decreases the length of hospital stays in the long term.

  10. Cont.. • Strokes • Physiotherapy during the recovery for stroke victims has also been a proven method of rehabilitation, allowing these people to recover much more quickly from the effects of the stroke. • It is much more cost-effective for a stroke victim to receive physiotherapy rehabilitation at home or within the community rather than at the hospital. Physiotherapy rehabilitation helps to reduce the person’s long-term dependency on institutional care as well as the length of time spent in the hospital. A physiotherapist is assigned to each stroke victim as a way of aiding their rehabilitation and working with them to towards their “re-ablement” and recovery from the stroke.
