  2. 1. What does the term Rendering mean? • Rendering is applying color and shading to an object.

  3. 2. What are the three media that have been traditionally used to produce renderings? • Paint • Charcoal • Pencil • chalk.

  4. 3. What is a material in 3ds Max? • A material is a set of data defining how an object should appear when rendered by 3ds max. • A material controls such qualities as the color of the object, how light reflects off the object, and any surface textures applied.

  5. 4. What is considered the control room for materials? • The Material Editor

  6. 5. What is the modeless dialog box? • A modeless dialog box is a dialog box that allows you to continue to work in the background without having to close it.

  10. 9. Why should material libraries be used? • They allow you to apply materials to different models without having to recreate the same materials.

  14. 13. How do you place a material listed in the Material/Map Browser into the Material Editor? • Locate the name of the material in the material/map list and then double-click on the name.

  15. 14. What are the two basic ways of applying a material to an object? • Pick, hold, and drag the material sample into a viewport and drop it onto an object, • first select the object, locate the material in the Material Editor, and then pick the Assign Material to Selection button.

  17. 16. What are the three ways to open the Render Scene dialog box? • Pick the Render Scene button on the Main toolbar, • select Render… from the Rendering pull-down menu, • press [Shift][R] on the keyboard.

What is the purpose of the Production and Draft buttons in the Render scene dialog box and on the Main toolbar? • The Draft and Production buttons allow you to set up two renderings with different settings. • The Draft button may be used for a low-resolution rendering and the Production button may be used for a final render.

How do you save a rendered image to a file? • Pick the Files… button in the Render Output area of the Render Scene dialog box. • In the Render Output File dialog box, enter a name for the file, • Pick a file format, • Pick Save. • Then, make the appropriate settings in the resulting dialog box that corresponds to the specified file format.

  20. 19. After a rendered image is saved, how do you view the file? • Pick View File… from the File pull-down menu. • Then select the file in the View File dialog box • Pick the Open button to view the file.
