We have only one habitable planet (as of now), which is why we must take care of it if we value our own lives. Luckily, billions of people around the world realise it today and are taking measures to grow awareness and consciousness. For instance, you might have come across this hashtag - #OnlyOneEarth. It was the first theme of World Environment Day (WED). It is the day dedicated to celebrating the environment and exploring actions to protect the same.

What is the Theme of World Environment Day 2022? We have only one habitable planet (as of now), which is why we must take care of it if we value our own lives. Luckily, billions of people around the world realise it today and are taking measures to grow awareness and consciousness. For instance, you might have come across this hashtag - #OnlyOneEarth. It was the first theme of World Environment Day (WED). It is the day dedicated to celebrating the environment and exploring actions to protect the same. The idea emerged around 1971-72; the day was celebrated for the first time on 5th June 1974 by the United Nations. World Environment Day might not get due media attention compared to Earth Day. Still, it is the UN Environment Programmes' principal vehicle for promoting, encouraging and building environmental awareness among citizens in member nations. Do you know when is World Environment Day celebrated? It is observed on 5th June every year. Many recognise it as Eco Day as well. To know more, read on.
Significance of World Environment Day and Why We Should Celebrate It World Environment Day is an important event for recognising environmental efforts and celebrating the importance of protecting the environment for human existence. Every day, without even knowing it, we're harming our environment in some way or another. It might sound bleak, but our urban lifestyle often causes environmental damages with long-lasting implications on our planet and different species, including us. Take the example of private car use. Cars release toxic sulphur oxides, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and other greenhouse gases, thereby increasing global warming and air pollution. If we can, at least, ride in pool cars or use public transport for commuting to our workplace, that can save the environment–World Environment Day promotes similar easy- to-follow practices. Celebrating World Environment Day is important for many reasons: •First, it creates awareness about the need for environmental protection. We're so fortunate to have such a beautiful planet that has granted us life, and we should not make it uninhabitable through our misdeeds. •Second, WED or Eco Day (however you wish to remember it) encourages us to make small changes in our daily lives to help the environment. As an individual, you might feel overwhelmed by the enormity of environmental protection; but any one of us can contribute towards the goal of environmental protection by making tiny changes in our lifestyle and daily practices. •Third, World Environment Day gives us a chance to celebrate how we are giving back to nature and helping to make the earth a better place for generations to come. •Fourth, the day is a truly global event with 143 UN member countries participating and organising events across different time zones. So, you get the chance to become a part of a worldwide celebration.
World Environment Day 2022 Theme Do you remember the Environment Day 2020 theme? Or the year before? Don't worry if you cannot as we are all busy in our daily lives and have endless responsibilities. But the day deserves a little more attention. So, we decided to remind you of the World Environment Day theme for 2022. It is 'Only One Earth'; this was also the theme for the Expo 74 organised to celebrate the first Environment Day in 1974. In 2022, we will commemorate 50 years of the Stockholm Conference 1972 that led to the day's inception. Sweden will host World Environment Day 2022. How Can We Celebrate World Environment Day 2022? There are plenty of ways to celebrate World Environment Day 2022. We have some exciting ideas just for you: •Avoid the comfort of a private vehicle for a day, at least. Do not use your personal cars or 2-wheelers on 5th June. Commute to your work using public transport; encourage your friends, colleagues, family members and neighbours to do the same. •Switch off air-conditioners. They guzzle energy and cool your room at the cost of making your surroundings hot. Older models also emit greenhouse gases. •Try enjoying darkness in the evening. We often keep lights, fans running even if we are not in. Stop this habit. Avoid using lights and other electrical appliances for at least an hour on World Environment Day 2022. •Water your garden and plant trees.Trees in our backyards and neighbourhood don’t just supply free oxygen; they prevent soil runoff during rain, provide places to live for birds, insects and other animals, and make communities more liveable. •Organise community clean-up activities. Cleanliness is next to godliness. Take the opportunity of celebrating World Environment Day to gather people for a community clean-up. It will help people to come together for a social cause. •Tell others about the significance of environmental protection. We are sure that you will find someone who does not know about Eco Day. Promote the day among your people; let them learn about how small changes in everyday life practices can bring enormous changes to the environment. It is always good to build awareness. •Share on social media. Let people know how you plan to celebrate World Environment Day 2022; take pictures of the small steps you have taken to protect the environment and share them on your social media pages. It will motivate others. If you're feeling ambitious, you could try hosting an environmental festival in your area. It would give a much larger audience a chance to learn about protecting nature and teach others how they can do their part for the planet too!
Finally World Environment Day gives us a chance to reflect on improving our relationship with nature and protecting the planet we inhabit together. When we focus on our connection with nature, we can find new ways of thinking about environmental issues and learn how to protect the world around us. The problem will not go away in a day or two, but we must find ways to be proactive in fighting them. Source: https://www.rnbglobal.edu.in/blog/12-04-2022/theme-of-world-environment-day-2022
